I just need something handy to bring on family trips, outtings and dinner. Nothing too big, or too expensive, but it should still give good quality prints.

When you mentioned quality prints, one part of the answer steps right up front. Look for the the highest megapixel number you can afford. The higher the megs, the better quality print. If all you expect to print are the regular 4X6 photos you get from a drugstore, then 3 megs should suit you just fine. Less megs than 3 will be suitable for online or viewing on a coumputer monitor. If you expect to print 8X10, you will not be happy with anythin less than 4 or 5 meg.

If you are looking for zoom capability (magnification) try not to pay attention to the digital zoom number. Optical zoom is the only number that matters if you are going to print your photos.

One final suggestion: stick with the name brand products. (Kodak, Fuji, Cannon, etc) These brands have a long history and, at least, you can expect better reliability.

Shop around and have fun!

I am an amateur photographer and I will tell you what standards I had with my first digital camera. First of all, you need to look at how many megapixels it has. I wouldn't settle for anything lower than a 4 megapixel. Second, you want to chose one with a good digital zoom. Most nowadays have 10x zoom but if you want one for vacation, look for a 12x zoom. And last of all, you need to pick the company. I would reccomend the following: Kodak, Cannon, Konica Minolta, Nikon, or Sony. My first digital camera was a Kodak with 6.1 megapixels and a 12x digital zoom. I bought it from Wal-Mart for $160.00 which is a very good price for cameras. Well, I hope you have fun with the cameras.

Best of luck shopping!!!

The folks from Best Buy or Circuit City should be able to help you out.
Try for a cheaper Nikon or Sony Cyber Shot. If those are two expensive Kodak makes some nice inexpensive newer ones that are good for everyday use that take pretty good pictures.

There are a lot of good camrea manufacturers out there, you really just need to look at all the specs such as zoom, megapixels, type of lens, sensor size etc.
