I just baby-sat my cousin this past week. She was bored to death. I have a feeling I will be baby-sitting her soon again. Please help me!

She is 7 going 8. She likes to play with beads but I have to small beads. I have some where you can barely put the sting through.

The Red Cross offers a babysitting class. While it might not be for you, here are a few ideas we present during it.

What do you love, that you can use with the kid? Music? Art? Sports? How can you bring this in while babysitting?

If you enjoy music, try making a special mix for the young girl- include stuff to listen to, to dance to, etc. I'd do cartoon themes, the chicken and hamster dances, some teenie-bopper or bubblegum pop, some sing-a-longs and silly songs, as much Disney as I could find, etc.

Teach her some songs and dances to move to, then do them along with her- fulfull her long-time but previously unknown desire to be a teen pop idol!

Also, prepare a Babysitters Emergency Kit (your 'magic bag'). What do you have sitting around that is new to her? Games, DVDs, CDs, computer things, craft items, toys, coloring pages (maybe downloaded from the computer), etc.

Find some fun to make snacks, like Ultimate Mini Pizzas (a round cracker, a bit of sauce, a pepperoni slice, a small bit of cheese on top- pop in toaster oven to melt cheese, serve). Give simple snacks fun names or interesting twists.

Hot dogs? Jazz'em up- split the dog in half length wise, use mustard to write her name on it. Use pickles and onion pieces as bits of 'bling'. Use food markers (a great babysitter tool) to turn the potato chips into fortune cookies or those 'message heart' candies. Jazz up the drinks by floating a flower in them, or using cubes made of fruit or ice cream, etc.

I babysit all of the time. The best thing to do while babysitting is to keep the child occupied. If the child is small (1-5 yrs old) buy a few toys that the child can play with or pop in a movie and provide the young one with healthy snacks. If the child is (6-10) provide the child with something that they are interested in, such as an AGE appropriate video game, or play games with them.

OK. How well do you know your cousin? Do you know what she likes? Dislikes? Use your knowledge of her,(or if you don't have any...GET IT) to entertain her. Don't just sit there and stare at her or ignore her. That never works. Talk to her, ask her questions. If she's really little create games or activites, like making popcicles out of her favorite koolaid. Or even a chore out of a game in which if she gets it right she gets a special prize., (Experianced babysitting move, use with caution) If she is older ask what she wants to do. If you can't allow that because of your own reasons. find something in that similar area that would work just as well. Just observe the kid as a PERSON, LISTEN to her and go from there. If you need anything more just ask..

Unfortunately, children expect baby sitters to keep them busy since sometimes they feel a little awkward having a babysitter around. I used to bring a "baby-sitting" bag with me that had all sorts of little things in it: coloring books, crayons, games for small groups, paper, pencils, washable markers, small toys, puzzles etc. (dollar store stuff) When it's time for you to go, all the items go back in the bag... so they have something to look forward to when you come back again.

It's helpful to check out some web sites for simple, kid-friendly craft ideas (like making a necklace) and fun things to do (like going out on a picnic).

Have fun!

Take books, and games. Also take a craft to do if she is old enough. There is a game called freeze dance, you play music and dance and stop the music they stop in whatever dance moves they are in. How old is she? Good luck and have fun.Kids are great.

Try some arts and crafts, kids love them and you dont have to be very crafty to do them. She will probably love to string beads and make her very own necklace.

Good luck!
