My dog woke up this morning with diarrhea and there was some blood in it. I can't take him to the vet until tomorrow, but I'm worried. He seems fine, happy and energetic, but I'm not sure what could be wrong. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this?

Change of food, Stress, parasites, lots of things. Skip dinner tonight. This will allow everything to clear out. Allow plenty of water. If you want you can do cooked white rice with boiled white meat chicken.

Pork in particular could cause a dog to become ill, even the bones of a pork roast are enough to affect him...if you have switched brands or type of dog food without gradually reducing his regular food while increasing the new food could cause this type of reaction, although blood in his stool could signal intestinal parasites. Worms are a possibility as adult dogs are suseptible to these nasty little things just as puppies are.

Do not deworm the dog however until you see the vet who will be able to take the necessary steps if this is the case, because this could cause more harm than good. Ensure he has plenty of water throughout the day and evening.

Check these sources, the first provides information that repeats what I and the responding assistant vet have provided but also gives you a list of questions to prepare answers for that you can then have available for your vet.

http://www.petplace.com/dogs/hematochezia-blood-in-stool-in-dogs/page1.aspx this site lists a larger range of possible illnesses, however, the most likely situations are not the most serious as those indicated here so do not worry excessively ok?

You are doing the right thing by ensuring you get to the vet as soon as possible...follow the steps outlined, particularly the liquid offerings and it should be fine to see the vet tomorrow, especially if your dog is still happy and acting normal. Vet offices sometimes have emergency numbers and services...if he changes in activity and acts lethargic etc, contact the emergency number and explain the situation. You might also call the vet and explain the symptoms now he can tell you if it is important to get in today or not.

Take care and hope your fellow is better shortly

POSC06 is correct. My dog carries giardia and he had a bad episode of it and could not even keep the blood from coming out (he would not even come inside the house)- it scared the sh** out of me too!!! He had to be on IV fluids for dehydration but was perfectly fine after antibiotics-I thought he was on his deathbed. It seems really scary, but I would not panic if I were you. Do watch very closely and if you still feel it's a problem, take him to vet tomorrow when you can. Do not worry about getting him there today. Also, my dog now eats low residue food (Rx) and has never had a problem w/diarrhea since. Feed him like POSC06 says- they told me to build his stomach up the same way we do when we have intestinal upset.

The first answer from the Vet Assistance is the best one so far. Sometimes dogs just get diarrhea. If he doesn't seem sick, just skip tonight's meal. Then start tomorrow with some white rice and a little chicken. If your dog starts to act sick, then take him to the vet. If your dog is still a puppy or hasn't had his shots, then by all means, take him to the vet ASAP. If your dog has had his shots then there is no reason to panic over diarrhea especially if your dog is acting normal. If it doesn't go away a few days or if he stops eating, definitely take him to the vet.

Take him to a vet asap! Vet's are trained to handle dogs that can get aggressive since many get aggressive when they are injured. Your dog may have gotten into a poison like Anti-Freeze or have some other very serious problem.

OK, there is a difference between diarrhea and loose stools. It is only diarrhea if there are more than 7 movements per day. Less than that, it is loose stools.
A little blood in the stool indicates worms. If the stool is mostly blood, it indicates a deadly illness, such as Parvo or Corona, or an injury.

I would recommend something to what POSC06 said, but instead of white rice, use wheat. It's more healthier for dogs and it has more vitamins and things like that they need. Also, make sure he is eating and drinking normally. Make sure to have him check for tapeworms and heartworms.

could be colitis, do take him to the vet. the vet will want to get a sample of his feces, so if you can get one, that would be helpful. but yes, stress, change of diet ect....could be contributing factors. he may have gotten into some garbage, but it doesn't sound poisonious if your dog seem otherwise fine.
