Thoughts on how Christ cannot be God and married at the same time?? I would love to debate this -- I'm trying to get information for a paper!

Thanks for all of the answers so far, and just so you know, I'm interested on points on both sides of the argument, but just to let you know, I believe He wasn't married and couldn't have been married to be Christ. Here's two reasons: For Jesus to be the Savior, His actions must be consistent with Biblical teachings. In the Bible marriage is looked at in two aspects: 1) it is a representation of Christ and the church -- Christians are told to (husbands) 'love your wives as Christ loved the church' so why would Christ marry? It is a hypothetical syllogism with a missing premises (aka: a fallacy) 2) marriage means that a man leaves his father and mother and becomes one with his wife -- for Christ to be consistent with the Bible, this means He would separate Himself from God the Father, completely disassembling the trinity, which is the basic foundation for all Christian thought.

Super Gu says that The Bible says that Jesus never got married. That is not correct. The Bible doesn't say whether or not he was married. While on Earth, he was Human and therefore it would have been natural to be married as was the Jewish custom.

I believe that Jesus could indeed get married and have children and that would have no effect whatsoever on his miraculous being. He could have changed the water into wine in front of Mary Magdalene and his child. He could have taught about God and His teachings and still have a wife and child. Jesus was born man not spirit. He felt pain, sorrow, but most of all love. He loved His mother and His other father. Most of all he loved His Father (God). So indeed he could have the power to have had children. maybe he was so wrapped up in his teachings that he didn't have the time. Who knows? That does raise a question though if Jesus did indeed have offspring then would they be born with the powers that Jesus had?

This really seems like an incorrect basis to me. Jesus clearly could still be God, or the messenger of God, and be married, though there is no real evidence to support or deny his marriage.

First, Jesus' life and the miracles he performed are not at all lessened by the possability that he engaged in sex. Nor is the idea of a virgin birth from Marry lessened by the possability that she had sex after Jesus was born. And, for that matter, how could the miracles Jesus performed in his lifetime possably be any less impressive if he came into the world the normal way rather than through a virgin birth?

Throughout the entirety of the Bible, no single prophet even performs half the number of miracles that Jesus is attributed to. So, at the absolute least, even if he is not the son of God, he would be the greatest of all prophets (until that time, I havn't read the quran so I don't know what miracles Mohammed performed).

On another note, how could sex detract from Jesus being God? It is only because of our society that we see sex as dirty and disgusting rather than as the beautiful expression of love that it is. How could a process that allows two people to fully show their love and to create new life through this love be dirty? Are we to believe that God made man and went so out of his way to make woman as a companion for man so that they could sit around talking all day rather than express their love through mating?

Also, there are stories in the Bible (the moneychangers in the temple comes to mind) in which Jesus shows his humanity. So, if Jesus engaged in drinking wine, celebrating with other humans, and in rightous anger, there is no reason for him to abstain from sex his entire life. If God came to earth in human form, as we are told, why would he abstain from the human experience? He experienced happiness, friendship, love, anger, why not mating?

Take the entirety of what Jesus did. Take the miracles, the teachings, and the wisdom. Now, add a wife, some brothers, and maybe some children. Does he really look any different? Are any of the things he did any less important?

Also, to my knowledge, Jesus never once said that he was the son of God. He made several references to the "son of man." But it was only long after his death that the followers of his desciples claimed that he was the son of God.

Are we not all God's children? Are we not all the sons and daughters of God? He creates us, he gives us souls and personalities. What kind of empty, passionless people would exist if the entire equation was really sperm + egg = person, with no regard whatsoever to the soul.

On a final note, the Da Vinci code is a work of fiction. The writer of the book, the director of the movie, and the actors in the movie have said many times that it is a work of fiction with no evidence either way. So, try not to take it too seriously.

Sorry I couldn't help you with why the legacy of Jesus is destroyed by the possability of him being married, but that just seems rediculous.

If Christ was not God who suffered, died and rose from the dead, then the whole idea of Chritianity is a fraud and there is no religion at all. There are no marriages in heaven for we are like the angels as Christ said. You either believe or reject. You have a choice and a free will.Christ became 1/2man to be the mediater between mankind and God the Father. And, of course, he was without original or any sin.

Da Vinci Code is an amazing and entertaining FICTION. The author does not say anything else. Bible is a compilation of ancient books, made by people - for people at least 70 years after Jesus´ death (M.E), and recompiled throughout the years. It does not say if Jesus was married or not. Even funnier, it nor HIM does even say he was God. Though, it may not be the question. If you believe in anything, what does such detail matter? If you believe in God, what does matter what other people say or deny?

It's a book. Jesus never married. Jesus never had any children. The Catholic church is not hiding any marriage. It's all fiction, made up, imaginary. Why do so many people believe that it is some sort of revelation? I don't know. This is getting to be horrible, people basing their religion on something to made to make money. It's silly, really.

In the Davinchi code He was married, but the Bible says He never got married.

Davinchi code is a fantasy book, at the end it says you believe what you want to believe, which is the only true, you believe what you want to believe.
