Prisoners get a free ride with food and housing. They watch TV, form gangs, and do nothing all day. Why can't we bring back the chain gangs to make prisoners work? Then the issue of cheap labor will be settled at NO COST.

In a lot of places they do. I'm going to research it and find a source and then come back and edit this with my source. I remember hearing about places that do that though. Okey doke... I added my source.

There are still some P farms active across the nation. Most were phased out. They gave prisoners more rights than the law abiding citizens in most states. I agree that there should be more P farms. In the first answer he said let murderers do the work. Most of the prisoners that would do the work would probably be the druggies. With the three strikes and your out laws in most states a lot of small time druggies, petty thieves and bogus check prisoners might think twice before committing the act again if they had to work their butts off.

Some states have actually implement the chain gang idea of labor again. Arizona is the best know story.

But I doubt it will spread, or even last long where it's practiced now.

Why?

The 13Th Amendment to the United States Constitution reads:
"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

Yes, I see the "except as punishment for a crime" but I also see the "duly convicted" part of it, and I'm sure the courts will say that "Unless the sentence was specifically to doing labor it is unconstitutional."

Whose jobs should prisoners be allowed to take! I sometimes wonder where people get the idea of how great prison life is. I don't think killings, beatings and "other assaults" that many times go unpunished should be considered a good life. And besides, what if those people cleaning roads and picking tomatoes were the major customers of YOUR small business? What would YOU do then?

Because those are jobs that other Americans want! We need to get rid of immigrant workers because we Americans want those jobs, so don't go giving handouts like that to the prisoners! Sheesh!

they do do stuff. They clean the sides of the highway and most prisons have workshops and stuff where they make things. They do get to work, but they have to earn the privilege.

The Dutch have done exactly that for years.
Ikea springs to mind.

I think it's a fab idea while we're at it the dangerous ones can test new drugs for us.
They have to be tested on animals before we can be given them!
