If you live in this country it should be mandatory to have a least a small grasp on the english language. Yea it pisses me off also but there isn't alot I can do.
Yo I called the IRS a couple of years ago and it was in Spainish! Not even an option for english that time, at least I don't think but who knows they were speaking spainish, lol. I was livid!!
Until I move to another country I don't have to learn ANY other language.

You are a product of your culture. Americans are VERY biased when it comes to how right we are and that our language and customs are the best. But I'll tell you what - if you lived in ANY other country (Germany, France, Japan, etc.) - you would have to know at LEAST 2 languages. English is not superior - it's just what we speak and what we're used to.
But I think you are experiencing social/cultural stressors - and it's easy to be uncomfortable when you're trying to navigate in the world and get stuff done and you have the added difficulty of trying to communicate with other people - and being uncertaing about how they will perceive you or how to even interact. It's very intimidating to walk into "little mexico" and feel at home - when that's not what you're used to.
My advice: stay open minded and understand that the people you are speaking about deal with feeling different and uneasy every day. Fear is in everyone, and that's usually behind the anger and frustration. And unless you're Native American, your family came here and had to melt into society at one point as well. Be grateful for all the things you do have. You have advantages that you're probably not even aware of - you don't have to sit and pump gas all day because you can't speak English well enough to get into college.

You should be happy to learn a foreign language, rather than scorning the opportunity. Kids in Canada are required to take French up to grade eight, and we HAVE to take it because it's also one of our country's languages.
A lot of people do try and learn English, but I think a lot of Hispanic people may not be able to afford to take a class on how to speak English. I know this isn't true of all Hispanic people, but it does apply to a lot.
English may be a foreign language in the years to come, but all I can say to that is... thank God! English is the hardest language on the planet to learn. The grammer is different from almost every other language, and our prounounciation an spelling are also very confusing to try and learn. Learning other languages compared to English is easy, unless you want to learn German or Japanese, as they come in second and third hardest to learn.

i totally agree, this is america, language english. you come here you speak english, its the least they could do, right? i dont know where you live, but why they would only hire spanish speaking people seems to make no sense to me. its very frustrating, we wouldnt go to france or germany or something and expect them to understand us if all we knew was english. we might get lucky cause english is very popular. if were trying to make better our country by accepting everyone, there should be some limitations. its not being racist one bit, and its not even like this is our country, we can share, but then share the language too.

You are correct! And for the record, this is America and our national language is ENGLISH. Everyone that came here before from other countries had to learn it, so why don't they? Hell, I am Chinese and my great grandparents had to learn English when they came here from China. So, why should Americans cater to those who refuse to accept English as the language? We shouldn't! Learning English is a small price to pay for all the freedoms this countries give them.

You're not alone in this. We DO live in America, not Amexica. Foreigners need to at least understand our language, much as we need to learn some basic phrases in theirs, for simple understanding at least. Communication is vital in many cases, so why not be able to say a few things to tell 'em what you need? And I hope Spanish doesn't become our national language, for I'd mess it up and call someone's mother a bad name. Uh oh...

I agree. I don't care about people speaking their native language, but if I was in their country I would have to learn their langauge to get by. I think it should be the same here.

I mean if it's our country they should respect that. If they ever want to be able to rise above making burgers they need to drop the accent and learn english. Because no one wants a bill gates who can't speak english.

You must live in Southern California. If you do indeed live there, I would get used to the Spanish because it is here to stay.
