I've never burnt before but I've heard that my skin will peel now. How can I prevent this and maintain my tan?

Sunburn
Home Treatment

Home treatment measures may provide some relief from a mild sunburn.:

* Use cool cloths on sunburned areas.
* Take frequent cool showers or baths.
* Apply soothing lotions that contain aloe vera to sunburned areas. Topical steroids (such as 1% hydrocortisone cream) may also help with sunburn pain and swelling. Note: Do not use the cream on children younger than age 2 unless your doctor tells you to. Do not use in the rectal or vaginal area in children younger than age 12 unless your doctor tells you to.

A sunburn can cause a mild fever and a headache. Lie down in a cool, quiet room to relieve the headache. A headache may be caused by dehydration, so drinking fluids may help. For more information, see the topic Dehydration.

There is little you can do to stop skin from peeling after a sunburn—it is part of the healing process. Lotion may help relieve the itching.

Other home treatment measures, such as chamomile, may help relieve your sunburn symptoms.
Medicine you can buy without a prescription Try an over-the-counter medicine to help treat your pain or fever:

* Acetaminophen, such as Tylenol or Panadol
* Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs):
Ibuprofen, such as Advil or Motrin
Naproxen, such as Aleve or Naprosyn
Ketoprofen, such as Actron or Orudis
* Aspirin, such as Bayer or Ecotrin

Safety tips Be sure to follow these safety tips when you use an over-the-counter medicine:

* Carefully read and follow all directions on the medicine bottle and box.
* Do not use more than the recommended dose.
* Do not take a medicine if you have had an allergic reaction to it in the past.
* If you have been told to avoid a medicine, call your doctor before you take it.
* If you are or could be pregnant, call your doctor before you take any medicine.
* Do not give aspirin to anyone younger than age 20 unless your doctor tells you to

You can't stop it from peeling. Use aloe vera gel. Use the real stuff, not one of those with other garbage in it. The bottle will say 100% aloe vera gel. Or, use it directly from the aloe plant, which is better. Also, make sure to use lotion to protect the new skin underneath. I use Curel's Honey Vanilla with Shea Butter in the Naturals line. Smells & works great. To maintain a tan, you're better off using one of the sunless self tanners. There are a bunch on the market too. Hawaiian Tropics, Coppertone, Banana Boat, Neutrogena have a version of it. There are also Tanning lotions by Jergens & Neutrogena too. Sunless tans are safer in the long run too.

use a really good moistorizer or aloe vera...both should do the job.Your skin will always peel though after youve been sunburned because you have damaged your skin.Next time definitely use sunblock before your going to be outside for awhile in the sun..you dont wanna end up with wrinkles or even worse...skin cancer.

You can't stop the peeling that's going on right now, but to prevent it in future use a high factor sun cream and always moisturize afterwards.

I use pure Tea Tree Oil applied to the burned area, at least twice a day, for 5-7 days. This works for me, and it also relieves the discomfort of the burn.

Your skin is dead -- the burn killed it -- so now it will peel, revealing a nice, new layer of skin.

Use sunscreen, and you will tan gradually (thereby not peeling).
