What you are referring to is Revelation 8:10-12
10The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water— 11the name of the star is Wormwood.[a] A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.
12The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark. A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.
We don't know what it is that falls to the earth on this one (comet is probably the best guess we have). Also, this is supposed to happen during the time period referred to as the Tribulation.
The common understanding of Revelation is that in the future there will be a seven-year period of time in which the earth will be under a despot's rule (the antichrist) and God will send numerous plagues on the world, of which this is one. What form a "star falling from the sky" will take or what "making the water bitter" means, we don't know, but we believe that when this occurs, it will unmistakenly be able to be traced to this verse.
This 7 year period will be followed by Christ ruling earth for 1000 years immediately after.
There are different views on when Christ will return. The Pre-tribulation view (also seen in the Left Behind novel series) is that Christ will take all believers to heaven (the rapture) suddenly right before the tribulation begins, causing mass panic as many people suddenly vanish. the Mid-tribulation view is that this event takes place 3.5 years into the tribulation. The post-tribulation view is that Christ comes back at the end of tribulation and either the rapture doesn't occur (which is hard to reconcile with other passages in the Bible) or that the Rapture occurs as Christ is coming down to begin His 1000 year rule.
I personally do believe this will occur (I am of the Pre-trib persuasion). I believe that prerequisites that were impossible in earlier years have been fulfilled (Israel's a nation again, worldwide instantaneous video is a reality and a fact of life, there appears to be an increase in the number, intensity, and death count of violent storms, there is a multi-national government in existance (the EU) and an organization that could possibly become a worldwide government ( the UN) ( I'm not saying that these will be the same governments prophesied in Revelation, but that they have potential of satisfying the prophesies).
As far as when, however, we don't know, and since the Bible says noone will know the time or day, any day or time prophesied pretty much eliminates that one from being it. The Bible does say that it will be possible to tell the "season", and I think we're closer to that "season" than the world's ever been before.

I believe it will happen exactly when scripture says it will, when everyone is least expecting it. It could be when the asteroid hits, it could be any date you can give, but it will happen when you are least expecting him to come.
Doctrinally speaking though, I think that Jesus will come back after the 7 years of tribulation are over. Those that don't see that in scripture it say only one return of Christ and then the judgement are just trying to get out of being here for the tribulation period. I honestly do not want to be here for that, but if thati s God's will, so be it.

What is important is not the time of return, but the readiness when He return. As someone above said, Jesus himself does not know the time.
Remember the story of the virgins without oil? Remember the story of the story of the thief coming in the night?
Another point, Jesus does not left us to the hands of the devil. It was Adam who handed us to Devil. On the cross, Jesus conquered death, and proclaim that the Kingdom is here.
From that moment on, Kingdom of God is expending. Theologically, there is a term called, "already but not yet". His Kingdom is already here, but not yet fully actualised until he comes.

Whoever said that is full of bull. No one knows when the day will be. Jesus, the Son of God didn't even know. God is the only one who knows. He is preparing heaven for all of the believers. When he is finished, Jesus will return to take all the believers away from what is to come on Earth...

I have news for you, Jesus isn't coming back. He's been dead 2000 years and he's staying that way.
Swimmersk -
i think jesus is coming back no matter what phycotic (is that how you spell it?) scientists think. if it happins, then people who have excepted (People who except him? As in,The act of excepting or the condition of being excepted; exclusion? So people who don't believe in jesus then. Ok.) jesus as their savior will go to heaven, those who haven't, well, um, they go to hell. what more is there to say?!
So what you are saying is that despite what phycotic scientists say, those who don't believe in Jesus will go to heaven and those who do will go to hell? Why thank you! That's a very nice thing for a christian to say to an atheist. I hope you have a nice stay in hell.

Jesus will come back when he feels like it. The Bible makes it clear that we cannot know the hour or the day. Any attempt at predicting His return is futile.

Well, read the bible, especially REVELATIONS. It tells what will happen at the end. God is the only one that knows when the world will end. No scientist will tell us when its going to end.
Believe in God and he will take you to heaven with him whenever he comes.
