Root canals are contained withing the tooth, unlike surgury or extraction. So smoking is Permitted. The only reason you wouldn't be able to smoke is if the root canal surgury throught the gums. (it's called endodontic surgury or Apico)

Real question is; "Would you want to smoke after a root canal?" Is there an advantage?

It may cause excessive dryness, irritation, and bleeding. I would wait at least a day, but if you need one that bad, I did, I say surround the area with cotton or gauze, to keep the smoke from affecting the area.

Your not supposed to because your blood has a harder time clotting when you drag on a smoke. I do anyways though and it doesn't seem to hurt anything.

No, it will give you dry socket. Not just for the air you are putting thru your mouth, but also from the sucking that it involves.
