The branch of the United States Armed Forces (notice UNITED STATES) was the U. S. Revenue Cutter Service (now U. S. Coast Guard) in 1790. The U. S. Army in 1791 and the U. S. Navy and U. S. Marine Corps in 1794. The Army, Navy, and Marine Corps were founded in 1775 before there was a United States and disbanded after the Revolutionary war.. The oldest "branch" of the military is the Army. That being said the local militias that were in place before the creation of the army and fought in the French and Indian war were later orginized into the National Guard. As an asside Washington commaned the Virginia militia and was actualy responsible for starting the French and Indian War.

The Amry, then the Army and the Navy. Then the Army became the Amry-Army Air Service, then the Army-Army Air Force, then the Army and Air Force. That's Three out of four, the Navy then began to train it's own ground troops becoming the Marines.

Actually it is the State Guard in the original 13! They now are unpaid though, answer only to the Governor of the State. But as tradition has it they are still a operating militia of the individual States.
