I think it has to do with the prestige of the church and/or the type of people who minister to the needs of the people that attend the church. A Cathedral is usually where the Bishop is the pastor of the church so it is usually a church built in grandeur and can hold a lot of people. An Abbey is a place where the leader is an Abbot which is the leader of a religious order who has the task of ministering to the needs of the brothers and priests of that order to lead them in fairness and the peace of God. York minster is actually a catherdral where bishops used to preside over the masses but I don't think that It is a currently operating as a cathedral. I've just emailed the York Minster information and am waiting for the reply on the current status.

All three terms are used to describe a grand church of an episcopal bent (Catholic, Anglican and sometimes Lutheran).

In the case of a Cathedral, the church is presided over by a Bishop. In the case of a Minster or Abbey, the church is presided over by an Abbot.

This is because a Minster originally refers to a church attached to a monastery, and an Abbey referred to the collective buildings of a monastery.

Abbeys (in the sense of a cathedral rather than monastery) are usually founded and more closely associated to monastic orders, such as the Cistercians, and reflect the aesthetics and beliefs of those groups.

Minster is only used in England, whereas Abbey is used throughout the Christian world.

A cathedral is the most church in a diocese. it really is the position the bishop of that diocese is depending. An abbey is a church (and its linked homes and grounds) it really is occupied by ability of a community of clergymen or nuns and ruled over by ability of an abbot or an abbess. A minster replaced right into a mom church for a community - the critical position from the position clergymen went out to serve in the encompassing daughter church homes. The minster gadget of church homes flourished in the course of the Saxon era in England, and has lengthy because that died out. although, some church homes keep the call of minster, even although they no longer serve that position (one celebration of that's York Minster). Similaraly, there are some church homes which replaced into once abbeys, and nevertheless keep the call, even although they are no longer used by ability of clergymen. Examples contain Westminster Abbey, Dorchester Abbey and Malmesbury Abbey.
