A day out...a lot of new retirees find themselves bored very quickly...you could also ask his help to fix something (something he is good at) this is a gift he won't realize he is getting...but feeling useful is always nice...if he is enjoying his retirement and doesn't seem bored or listless, then a day out with his kid is still nice...maybe see a game or go bowling...
