Here are two tricks I learned: One is from drafting in high school and the other is from laying out work areas where I work.

Make a scaled model of your living room on paper. You can draw it or cut it out either/or. In drafting/designing a house we build the room design out of the furniture you want to put in the room. But since you already have your room size. You can draw your room then make scaled cut outs of the furniture you want to put in it. The nice thing is that you can move the cut-outs around to try dozens of different layout configurations. After you come up with a couple layouts that you like, then comes my second tip.

In the factory, we often lay out where machines will go, walkways, tables, etc with tape on the floor. You can use the actual dimensions of the furniture you have or are planning to buy to see if you will definitely feel comfortable with that layout. It helps determine stuff like:

Will the sofa stick out too far into the walkway?
Will the furniture be too close together?
Will I be able to see the tv well?

You can also extend the tape up onto the walls instead of just on the floor to determine where you want paintings and if they will fit. How tall a bookshelf will be. Will the curtains get in the way, etc.

I like doing it this way because first you make plans that can be easily be changed on paper. Then you test it in actual life to see if it will work. Then you finally move all the stuff in.
