Happiness is a decision you make about your surroundings. It is not something external. No one can make you happy (well, except you yourself). You decide to be happy.
Life is hard. No one is owed anything. You are born wet, cold, and hungry and then it gets worse. But with the help of others, especially your family, you can survive. You learn to get food in you, get warmer. You learn how to signal when you need water and food and warmth. These are major steps. Many do not make it this far.
Later on you develop all sorts of artificial wants and call them needs. Like love of that girl over there. Maybe a good grade in math or a new car all seem important. You decide that without something you cannot be happy. Those are decisions you make. In reality, the basics are air, water, food, shelter. You got those and you are pretty danged blessed.
Of course, you have your own life to decide about. Me, I am happy right this second (now if Charlize Theron should ask you where I am....well, tell her I am over on the beach near Pismo, she will know.)

I think sometimes people have expectations of what happiness should be and when it never becomes a reality they feel nothing else but those expectations can bring them happiness. So the simple things in life that could make them happy are ignored. Sad, isn't it.

The founding fathers guaranteed us 'the freedom to pursue happiness' but they didn't tell us where to look for it!
