It depends, how much time do you have to spend with your pet? Will you have your pet spayed or neutered (I suggest this, so they will not misbehave or attract a crowd of "male friends" at certain times). Do you have a lot of time to invest in training a dog/puppy so it will not use your home for it's toilet? Do you have a yard that is fenced in well so your dog could be safe, and not go astray or get loose and get hit by a car? (The same can happen with a cat)...
I suggest a cat, a cat does not require that you be there to let or take them out to do their business, you buy a litter box and some good odor absorbing cat litter, and keep it scooped so the amonia in the cat's urine does not burn it's feet and for the most part the cat will use the box for it's business if you are not there to put it outside. I have known cats who never went outside, in fact if you have your cat's claws removed it's not really humane to just put your cat outside. Their claws enable them to climb to escape danger, they are also very effective weapons if they are attacked by other animals. If you have not got a proper yard for a dog, a cat can make wonderful company!
I am a dog person, but I also remember puppyhood, and the lessons that must be taught and learned by a dog AND by the puppy owner so you can share your home with one another. Cat's may scratch up the furniture, you can get them a proper scratching post and sometimes change their focus, or have those front claws removed... and if you do not keep their litter fresh enough then they will look for a different place to use the bathroom! But they make nice pets, cats are a tad less affectionate than dogs, a bit more aloof, but they can also snuggle down with you and purrrrrrrr while you pet them, (if they decide to really love you). Young kitties love to play and chase and they can be so full of energy and a lot of fun...If you have a mouse problem, it's better to try to get a young barn cat, the mother cat has probably already started teaching the young kit to be a hunter. If you want the cat to help with mice, then do not have the front claws removed, they will need them to catch the rodents.
Cats are easier, and slightly neater, I suggest staying with the dry cat foods, because the crunchy cat foods help to keep their teeth clean, and if you find a good brand it will give them most of the nutrients that they need.
Good luck, and before you choose any pet, remember you are not just getting an animal, you are choosing a friend and roommate...I love my little dog, but she has been a real head case to raise! (Terrible Terrier Terror).
Try to get a cat or dog that matches your furniture and carpet color scheme, that makes the shedding less noticable, and there will be times when there will be plenty of hair get your vacuum ready!

I have a cat. You should pick the pet that you think is best for you. If you don not want to walk the dog and pick up after it then get a cat because it is less work, and you do not have to take them out just change the cat litter at least 2 times a week

If you are a person who values cleanliness and perfection then I would recomend a cat. If you'd rather have affection then I would get a dog. Cats take far less work, it's like sharing and apartment with a self sufficient teeneager, dogs are like caring for a six year old. They take a lot of attention but give alot back too.

I am a dog person and I say dog. They do so much more for ya and respond to you much better than a cat who just lays around and walks all over the place and doesn't listen. I say, go for the dog. they are great !

Getting a dog will enrich your life in ways you never thought of. Don't get me wrong, cats are great too, but they can't interact with you like a dog would.

I think Dogs would be a great choice for new Pet owners, because they are loving and show the most emotion from most pets and they will love you forever. If you don't like them, (you will love them) cats may be the pet for you.

I love all animals but this could depend on where you live. And if you are looking for a house pet or an outside pet. I do have a black lab who I adore. He is like an overgrown baby. Just look around and don't rush a decission, when you see the right animal you will know. Good Luck!

If you prefer an independant pet , choose a cat. If you prefer a more interactive, dependant pet choose dog. Analyze your lifestyle and choose the pet that adapts better to your life.
