Once upon a time, we used to put TV antennas on the roof of our house, because that's where the best reception was. This is by and large a thing of the past, but it illustrates the point...
Get a set of rabbit ears (basically a removable antenna), preferably with a long cord, and hook them up to your TV. Place the antenna in whichever location that gives the best reception in your home. The best location is generally high up, on a balcony, near a window, or somewhere there the most Television-radio waves from the most directions can be received.
Note, if you live in an apartment building, there's a very good chance that you'll have to get cable to get good reception. Often when you live in an apartment, you can only get two three channels with decent reception, sometimes, you get none at all.

An antenna on your roof. If the stations are in different directions you will need a rotator also.

You could try using an antenna....if you don't have one, aluminum foil works just as well.

just stick a fork's picks in the antenna input. it really works. obviously it has to be a metal fork.
