The reason that The daVinci Code is fiction is that the characters "seeking the truth" are not real people. They are characters from Dan Brown's head. Yes, Jesus was a real person(s) and yes the locations in the novel are real places, but the main characters in the story are fictional.
It is also trying to get readers to think about their belief systems rather than just follow blindly. Thus, "Seek the Truth." Also..it's part of the marketing scheme.

No, but the curator and his family and the "cryptologist" and the albino and the cripple are all fictional.
Many, many books have stories spun around a truthful thing. Like the spy novels surround the truthful tensions between nations, but they are pure fabrications.
The NOVEL, the fictional story is about a man who seeks the truth within a fictional plot. That doesn't mean the claims made during the course of the story hold any more water than a slotted spoon.

Well, "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" had at least one non-fictional character in it (Hitler), but that doesn't mean the whole movie is non-fictional.
"Field of Dreams" had eight non-fictional characters (Shoeless Joe Jackson and seven other members of the 1919 White Sox), but does that mean that the whole movie is to be taken as fact?
And what about movies that have famous people playing themselves -- as Dan Marino did in "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective"? Does that mean that "Ace" was a nonfictional movie?
As for the tag line "Seek the Truth," it's nothing but a marketing slogan.
Remember that even Dan Brown said that his book is fictional, and the producers of the movie said the same thing about the film.

The words "seek the truth" no matter where they are found - are a challenge to go beyond fiction, myth hyperbole, lies, deceptions - and look for the truth.
It is possible to tell fictions, lies, or half-truths about real historical characters. That doesn't change untruth into truth.
I too, encourage you to SEEK THE TRUTH - don't just buy everything that is put on a Hollywood Screen: If you truly seek the truth, you will find it.

There's a whole genre of books based on history that are just speculation. Historical fiction. They have actual historical figures, but the story lines deal with more speculative things, the what ifs. The tagline is SEEK the TRUTH because it's a bit of clever marketing.

I am an atheist, and truly have no interest in it either way, but I do have to say that it is a work of fiction. The use of historical characters and places does not make something valid. "Gone With the Wind" would be valid using that standard, since we know the Civil War occurred and that Atlanta is a real city. Tourists to the places mentioned by Dan Brown are usually surprised to find that some of the things he writes of actually aren't true.

Many fictional novels have been written about non-fictional characters.
Anne Rice currently has a beautiful novel out called, "Christ The Lord: Out of Egypt." It is the story of the childhood of Jesus. Great book.
Oddly enough, nobody seems to have much of a problem with this fiction...
Fiction can often lead people to search for truth.

Let me preface this answer! If you are a Bible believer, Church going person, then this answer may upset you! If you are a seeker of TRUTH, then continue to read on! All three major religions are tied together through the recognition of Abraham in Islam, Judaism and Christianity. The word Genesis comes from Bershit in Hebrew, which means at the Beginning. When I first began to study the Old Testament I found two creation stories-Gen 1 and Gen 2. This was a paradox, a conundrum for me and it took me 23 years to get the answer. The Original Teaching of Truth was brought to this planet thousands of years ago. It was given to the Adamic Civilization and passed into Egypt then through the Temple of Solomon and Davidic Line up to Jesus througth Mary-Miriam his mother. I will be happy to answer any other questions you might have.

Just because the novel talks about Jesus and Mary Magdalene, and other non-fictional characters doesn't mean that the story itself is not FICTIONAL. The controversy is fictional. People that believe in this controversy obviously don't have a strong enough faith, and should work on that.

They can say anything they want. Just because they say it is true does not make it true. The DaVinci Code was not written as a non-fiction book. I definitly agree with you that Jesus is not fictional, but many of the ideas they put forth about Him are.
