From a general manager's stand point, and you're not going to like this....you should not have been discussing salary in the first place. In every environment I have managed, that was cause for dismissal. And this is why. Discussing salary in the workplace is inappropriate, immature, and it only leads to arguments and discontempt. If you approach your boss with your newly discovered information, no good can come of it. Your boss will only be angry with you.
Also, what kind of experience did this other guy have? Some experience is well worth the money. If he had some kind of supervisory experience before he came on board with your company, that may be the money he required before he could come on board. Maybe he had something else that he brought to the table that your manager thought he was a good investment. I don't know.
But, you can still ask for a raise. Don't mention the other guy. Just ask. If you have truly been doing a good job and it's been awhile since your last performance review perhaps it's time. It never hurts to ask. Don't threaten to leave, just ask. You may not get $40 a day more, but it's a start.

How is it that you know how much this other guy is getting paid? Salaries are confidential and not somethat that should be talked about. I certainly wouldn't let on that you know how much somebody else is getting paid.
There are many things that are factored into someones pay; experience, prior salary, education, etc. If this guy is really making that much money, it may be what he was asking for when he interviewed for the job. Did you ask for more money or just take what was offered to you? You don't get what you don't ask for.
If you are really concerned about it, do your research. Find out what most people in your area get paid for your job. There are websites that list this information. Decide what you want to say and the best way to "argue your case" to your boss. Set up a meeting and speak with him.
Good luck.

You can do one of three things:
1. Go to your boss and ask for a raise. I wouldn't let on that you know how much the new guy makes as bosses usually don't like that sort of info being talked about.
2. Live with it.
3. Find another job.

Gather some ammo, collect all your accomplishments, any cost saving ideas you introduced or new processes you implemented. Set up a time to meet with your boss and discuss a possible pay raise. Make sure you go in there with an open mind and maybe compromise if he does not agree to a raise at this time. Take that time to discuss what his expectations are of you and any areas of opportunity, agree to meet in a month or so to discuss your progress.

well is 70 dollars a day what you and your boss agreed on? then you really don't have an arguement! now what you could do is ask for a raise! but if you are not satified with the money you are making now then find another job if he won't raise you.

research the statistics at pay-equity.org. Your not alone, for whatever reason men still get paid more than women in most fields.
Make sure all of your ducks are in a row. provide backup to your demand for pay equity and ask for a raise to an equal level!!
