♡I think you mean Shiba Inu, but I wouldn't say 'Shiba Inu' (inu means dog) was the "most popular" dog in Japan, but it's certainly one of the most traditional Japanese dog. I'm told that these dogs are very good with children too and quite lovable. Did it look like this:

In the area of Japan where I live, the Shiba Inu is a popular sight! I see them on a daily basis. Recently though it has become very trendy to have cute "lap dogs" here in Japan. People carry them around everywhere and even dress them up. I have never seen a Shiba Inu dressed up though.(*^o^*)

If the dog you met in key west is a kind of that dog, that you have never seen before, it might be one of Japanese traditional dogs because in Japan regardless the trend's dogs, Japanese dogs are always have popularity and fed by many Japanese people in all over Japan. My aunt are living country side, and she also has one. He is very friendly royalty dog, and it looks some what like fox as well (I think he is cuter than fox)
According to the web site, http://66.94.231.168/search/cache?p=shibainu+most+popular&sp=1&ei=UTF-8&fl=0&fr=fp&SpellState=n-2617658031_q-yaQ2m5YfD4fQiZFuqyfiHwABAA%40%40&u=www.dogbreedinfo.com/shiba.htm&w=shibainu+most+popular&d=W2AEWzmtM89C&icp=1&.intl=au
Shiba inu is most popular dog in pet among (Japanese??) dogs in Japan. One of the reason is because Shiba inu is the dog that is most easy to feed in Japanese dogs.
If the dog you saw is not Shiba inu, you could be find the dog on following web page:

Here's a picture of an ornament of a Shiba Inu ...
http://www.doggiftshop.com/gift-shop/images/SC-138.jpg
... is that the one??
Anyway, Japanese people do NOT eat dogs, they never HAVE eaten dogs, and they have never NEEDED to eat dogs!! The neighbouring countries which DO eat dogs NEEDED to do so because it was the best source of protein available to them!!
Japanese people got plenty of protein from fish!! And now they get it from fish, chicken, cows, pigs, and occasionally sheep!
I live in Japan, and I don't often see Shiba inu around. Most dogs here are Dachshunds!! Until recently Chihuahuas were probably more popular, because they are the stars of the adverts for a large credit organisation. But the organisation has been accused of unfair practices, so now the Chihuahua isn't quite so popular!! People do NOT eat their dogs though - they love them to bits, and spoil them rotten!

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://tinyurl.im/5TRsG
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Maybe the dog that you watched is "Shiba Inu".
Shiba Inu is famous dog in Japan. But I don't think Shiba Inu is the most popular dog in Japan.
In Japan, Chihuahua was used in a TV commercial last year, so Chihuahua was very popular. But it isn't so popular recently.
I see a Golden retriever and a dachshund and a papillon around me well.

Dog Training is all about getting your canine to behave well, but some people do it for sports and other entertainment purposes. Some of the other reasons people train their dogs are:
It rewarding since you get a sense of accomplishment once a dog can do something new.
It is a good opportunity to bond with the dog - this is important for the dog and for the owner.
You can make money when you train dogs as a business or for sport.
Training the dog is fun and it challenges the owner and the dog.
Different trainers have different techniques for training their canine. However, some techniques are more effective than others. To learn about the best techniques, visit a registered dog trainer, talk to a veterinarian, or do online or offline research.
There are several types of training that you, or a professional, can explore to train dogs and these are:
1) Behavior and obedience training: One training that is universal is behavior and obedience training. This is done on dogs of all ages, but it is better to start when the canine is a puppy because as they say, it is hard to teach old dogs new tricks. Behavior and obedience dog trainingbrings out the best in the dog and it makes understanding each other easier.
2) House training: House training is very important and it should also start when the dog is still a puppy. House training is all about training the dog to have house manners and to respect your space. There are several techniques used for this and they include crate training and pad training for training the dog to 'go' outside.
3) Positive reinforcement: Positive reinforcement is a new type of training approach and it is all about rewarding the dog for good behavior or for learning a new trick. All animals tend to perform better when there is a promise of a reward. Possible rewards are snacks, interaction with other dogs, giving the dog your attention, or giving the dog tug toys - the reward should take into consideration what the dog likes because dogs are different.
4) Negative reinforcement: Negative reinforcement training approach has been used for many years where the dog is punished for failure to learn or to behave properly, but this does not work because it only makes the canine scared and causes it to lose confidence. Negative reinforcement techniques included beatings and electric shocks.
5) Trick training: Trick training is done for fun, by those who want a sports dog, and those involved in other entertainment activities such as the circus. You should choose the dog carefully to avoid frustration because some dogs are easier to train than others.
6) Teething: It is important to train dogs when they are teething because they are under a lot of pain and they usually chew on furniture such as table legs, shoes, and even wallpaper. Possible training techniques for discouraging the chewing are bad-smelling sprays on items that are at risk and giving the dog chew toys.
7) Command training: It is possible to train dogs to follow commands. These commands include 'sit', 'attack', and 'fetch', among others. This requires patience and there are various techniques of dog training that can be used to achieve this such as giving rewards.

the name is Shiba Inu. shiba means small and inu means dog. it is an interbreeding of the Sanin, the Mino, and the Shinshu. they were originally bred for hunting. they are very independent and intelligent dogs and one of the oldest dog breeds. they get up to about 15-25 pounds, with red color and do look a lot like foxes.

I think that it is a shiba-inu. They are very popular in Japan.
SHIBA means "a small thing", INU means "dog". Their hair is brown hair, black color and yellowish-brown. Their size is not so big. Characteristic of shiba-inu is that ears are small of triangle and stand. The tail is curling.
