I have a 10 year old boy. He and his friends are very much into computer and video games. It's the nature of the times and the age group. We play board games together and build puzzles. Other than watching TV, there is no other indoor activity that keeps him busy and away from the video games consistently. I try to get him outside when the weather is nice.
A pet does keep him occupied a little bit too if you haven't considered that. It's especially meaningful if he picks it out.

An airzooker... Like an air cannon you use like a bow.
Useful in simulating hosts with the help of a mate as you feel hit by somethinglike a pillow or it flies past you only nothing there. Accurate too.
An activity to show him real life is more fun ie jetski ride.
Traction kite
Like used in kite surfing but safety is a major issue hear so he would need supervision and get advice from shop (this can lift him off the ground and used with buggies, boards and eventually surf boards that can jump two story buildings. So introduce him to it. He will also build up major arm muscels. (think skateboard and snowboard shop or specialist supplier like Flexifoil.
As said get proper advice.
An Electric guitar.... perfect for getting respect, cool and the ladies when older if he learns to use it.

I am having the same problem with my 10 year old with video games. He is obsessed with them. I would say get him a gift card to Toys R Us or something but make it clear that he cannot get video games with it. After searching for a bit he will find something that he is interested in. I have laid down rules bout the video games and now my son is starting to get out more and swim and such. Good luck.

get him the Chronicles of Narnia books or the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings complete book series. he should be reading at this age (not vegging out in front of the PS2, like you mentioned) and these are the best books to read!

most young boys enjoy the outdoors. the dirt, the bugs, etc.
my boys at that age loved getting a microscope. wal-mart sells in expensive ones that boys can look at just about everything on. the
magnification of bugs, or grass, dirt, or flowers is awesome and interesting. hope you find this as a good choice.

Get him an electric scooter. It'll get'im out of the house, and every kid wants one. Or even a 4 wheeler. Just something electric that goes fast lol. He'll love it.

My youngest was 11 this year. I got him a catapult which can throw water balloons the length of a football pitch. Go here, to see it. There's loads of cool stuff.
