Used to people said "oh, that's cheesy" or "That's stupid" Or they would say that about you. Now they say "O that is so gay" or "you are so gay". It only means that it's stupid, silly, or corny
There really isnt any link between that specific use and the Gay community. The English language gets twisted and mis-used every day for the sake of comedy.
Think of the word "ironic" go look up the definition and you will see people use it improperly every day and now the alternative use has become acceptable.
Unless they Have changed the definition since Alanis Morrsette's song "Isnt it Ironic" came out. If you read the definition you will see the song is rifled with incorrect ussage of the word.
Any way I digress. The fact that specific words can have numerous meanings. Depending on how they are used. And the use of "gay" has aboslutely no reflection on the gay community when used in the circumstances under discussion.
INFACT, using gay as described in these circumstances the user is being Ironical.

It depends - sometimes it means corny, weird or stupid. It could also be used to mean flamboyant or eccentric(a gay friend uses it this way). Really it does mean happy but no one uses it like that.

Here in Maryland when someone says gay it usually means stupid or not right.

theyre trying to put you down. Like saying youre a loser or a skank, they call you gay to attack your sexual orientation.
the usual reply is "nuh uh! you are!"
