I know a woman who has only a 6th grade education, she's in her late 70's now, but she's worked for The House of Representatives, the US Senate, etc. Her friends have asked her what college did she attend. I know that the education she received was from reading. Reading opens doors to whole new worlds. She see how other people live, think, dream. You learn VOCABULARY, and comprehension. Because if you are curious, when you approach a word that doesn't make sense to you, you will look it up... I have personally learned a lot from reading and I share that with friends and family when they ask, where did you get that information, I can say, "I read it somewhere". So yes!

i don't know if it necessarily makes you smarter, but it does open up a whole world of experience . It also helps you to retain information that you normally might not have known. If you just happened to have finished reading something and someone asked you a question on that same subject, you would be better able to recall it while it's still fresh in your mind.

Yes. It builds vocabulary, stimulates the imagination, and exercises the brain. Especially if the reading is on a wide variety of subjects in different genres.

Reading only romance novels (smut), however, has little discernible positive effect.

yes, because you will pick up facts within the stories you read, as well as gain an understanding of the motivations of characters in the books you read, which may help you understand the motivations of people you know. Anytime you use your noggin, you get smarter.

Well, it actually depends on the book or any other reading material that you are using. If it is educational, of course you'll be able to gather new ideas and informations which adds to your knowledge. Also, reading widens once vocabulary, thus, making your vocabulary more enriched.
