but they were place in a cardboard box when i first saw them. we also use the kittens to sort of "lure" the mother around. will the mother hurt the kittens in this way?

She may have moved them because she felt that they were in danger. If too many people touch them or know of there whereabouts she will hide them in a dark place to keep them safe. Look close around somewhere dark and possibly secluded.

The mother probably moved them to a different location. Cats do that to protect their young from predators. She will usually move the kittens at least every 2 weeks or so. You want to find the kittens, follow the mother and she will lead you to them. Have no doubt she is caring for them but you will not see them for at least 4 to 6 weeks until she has weaned them. Just follow mom if you are worried but know she has everything under control. Good luck!!

The mother cat probably moved them to a place she felt was safe for them, away from people and other animals. Since she is a stray she is more feral or wild than a domesticated, indoor cat, and her instincts are to protect her young at all costs. However, if the kittens were left outside alone, it is possible another animal got to them or she could have abandoned them or killed them. It's hard to answer this without knowing all the circumstances, or if you or your family handled them a lot.

I hope they are okay, too.

Since you said the mother was a stray, she probably moved them to somewhere she feels is safe for them. She is probably taking care of them. She may have taken them into some wooded area, underneath a house or mobile home, it could be most anywhere she feels like they are safe from predators. Sometimes they move their litters a few times before settling into one place.

If the mother felt that they kittens were sick or that she would be unable to care for them then she may have killed them, it's also possible that something else got them, a dog, coyote, raccoon and opossum, it's also possible that a person saw these kittens without their mother and thought they were abandoned so they took them in.

For their protection, the mother cat has moved them to another place where she feels they're better hidden. This is a very common thing.

The mom may have moved them, although I'd think she'd stay where she took them. Another animal may have gotten them. It's really hard to say. It's not like they can go too far by themselves at that age.

the kittens could have wandered away, but it`s a possibility that mommy ate her kittens.and if they did wander away they are more than likely allready dead now, sorry. hope you do find them seriously but its doubtful especially being only a week old.or you could place an add in your local paper LOST KITTENS, who knows !!!!
