A This is a behavior, similar to a grimace, which is known as the Flehmen Reaction. This is when your cat smells something, opens his mouth slightly, then wrinkles his nose and curls back his upper lip. In so doing, he is drawing in air, capturing the scent, and transferring it to a small, specialized sac known as the Jacobson's organ, an organ located in the roof of the mouth that sends signals about the scent to the brain. The Flehmen Reaction most often occurs in response to the scent of urine, though it can occur with other scents too.

They are pulling the scent into and over a gland in the roof of their mouths. It is more sensitive and if they get something they like they seem to do that.

Not really sure, but I do know that smell and taste are connected. Maybe that has something to do with it. I've noticed that with my cat as well. Then again he likes to dip his paw in his water dish and lick it. LOL

It's funny that you mentioned that! My husband and I laugh our butts off when our cat does that! She looks so funny, sometimes she will also stick her tounge out after. I agree with the others, to take in the scent more!

My cat only does that when she smells soemthing bad, like a citrus fruit or my dogs butt, somethign like that. Maybe it makes it stink less, I dont know, but its always around something she doesnt like.

I have my mouth open when I'm applying mascara.
Maybe that could be a clue.

Its to smell better. They are "absorbing" the smell, or tasting it I guess.
