my dog's nails fell off and I don't know why

If you are talking about the toe nails completely coming off and he didn't chew them off, then yes, that is a problem. He may have a calcium deficiency or worse. You need to have some blood work done on him so you can find out what it is. But, just so you know, I have a dog who's nails grow like weeds. He bites them off and they are quite long and only LOOK like he lost his nails. You may have that problem too. If you want to play it safe though, take him to the vet and ask a professional.
