I think it is very appropriate. The Godparents have agreed to be a spiritual and religious leader, as well as support and friend for you daughter as she grows up. This is a big commitment. A small gift, such as maybe a gift card, or a small bouquet of flowers, would be a good sign of appreciation for such a commitment and dedication. If you feel uncomfortable buying them gifts, maybe take them out to a nice brunch or supper following the ceremony.
A baptism is about the child, or your daughter, but more than that it is about a COMMUNITY, the community of the church accepting your daughter into their christian family and vowing to help raise her as a disciple. The godparents represent this acceptance, and are the primary people in charge of this important and large task.

As far as I know, there is no need to buy the godparents a gift. Both my kids have been baptized and I didn't buy gifts for their godparents. The baptism is about your daughter. It is her day.

Not necessarily. I'm a godmother times 2 and don't recall receiving a gift at the christening. It is customary to give gifts to the godparents on their (godparent's) birthday and christmas/hannukah.

i don't think you're supposed to, but it would be a very nice gesture. perhaps matching crucifix necklace charms would be appropriate and very symbolic?
