Patience.
I use to work for my Aunt who runs a rescue for animals in Georgia, and Ive found that the only thing you can really do is be patient.
Maybe get things that she can play with, kitty proof your place before you leave ( ie: put away the bread )
Really all animals are are children, and they need just what any other child would need. Patience and understanding.
I mean, if we hadnt been offered that by our parents Im sure most of us woulda been " given back ".
I know to compare kitties to children may seem off par, but if ya sit back and think on it the whole dynamic of it all is very similar.
Hope it hepled ;)

Well, as far as the table...not much can be done. My cats know they aren't allowed up there, but they still jump up when I'm not home. As for the shyness, just make sure whenever other people are in the house, they are not being loud or picking at the kitten. When she realizes that no one will hurt her, she should start being more social. The destroying things phase, is that...a kitten phase. Both of my cats are declawed, otherwise I wouldn't have any furniture left in my house. You can try a spray that you can buy at petsmart to help keep the animals off certain things (but probably don't want to use on the table). For the food problem, you'll just have to put in out of kitties way...in a cabinet or the fridge.

You need to be patient. This cat was either not properly socialized or the place where you adopted her did the best they could. When she acts up (on counters etc) get a plastic spray bottle or a water gun and give her a couple of squrits. Most cats start to get the idea "Hey if I jump up there I get that water thing." and will stop doing it. Try setting aside some time each night where you start out by just sitting near her. Gerber chicken baby food on your finger is a good way to get her to come to you. (Stage 2 make sure the ingredients say no onions) The goal is first to get her to eat from your finger without you stuffing it in her face then move on to you touching her etc the goal is to get her on your lap. You have to be very patient with each of these steps. It's not going to happen overnight. Good Luck.

I have a cat like that, who hides when people are around. She was very destructive as a kitten, but outgrew that. FIrst, if you haven't had them fixed yet, do that as soon as you can. That wll help withthe destruction. When she does things you don't like, squirt her witha water gun. And as far as eating stuff yuo leave out.... maybe just put it away until she outgrows this stage. And a good way to keep cats off countertops is to put some double sided tape down (just for a couple days).. .they stay off because they hate the feeling on thier feet. Tin foil sometimes workds for this too. But do'nt give up on the kitten, it'll get better. MIne turned into the most loving cat ever, but she still hides from strangers.

Sounds to me like she is just in that naughty phase. Cats calm down as they get older. What you can do with your bread is to get a plastic container for it. They sell them that will fit a whole loaf. You won't keep cats off counters and such because it's in their nature to climb. You might just need to assess whether you can handle having more than one cat in the house too. There are worse things than taking her back or putting her up for adoption.

Get a squirt bottle, and if you ever catch her doing these things, squirt her with it...It will work. I had the same problem. Give her some time and maybe when she is a little older she will come out a little more. You've got to discipline them as you would a child. Good luck
