They're more nocturnal; will be awake during the night while you're sleeping. So they're only catching up on their sleep during the day!

Cats have a different metabolic system.Depending on their diet-it can either increase their physical activity or decrease their energy. Also, their body temperature has alot to do with their activity. If it's more hot,a long haired or full coated cat will be less active as the extra heat affects their metabolism and makes them want to sleep. If it's cooler or the a/c is on-you'll notice a cat will sleep less and be more active. Also, prepareing plain, boiled chicken as a treat for cats will also aid them in being more active. But nothing makes a cat more active than a active owner who is activly playing with the cat.

They are nocturnal hunters by nature. If they were in the wild, they would sleep all day to avoid the heat and reserver their energy for the nightly hunt. It's instinct and probably not going to change. My two cats seem to be having a party every night and are anything but lazy!

Cats, by nature are nocturnal animals. Therefore they sleep a lot during the day, and at night they are very active. My Siamese tends to use the night to beat up my face, lay on my head, knead my back, claw my hands, put her wet nose in my ear, and suck on my hair. My fat one sleeps all the time. She's just fat.

I believe they need the sleep and do so for up to 18hrs a day. Maybe they're dreaming of ways to get more fur on your stuff and drive you crazy when you're absorbed in something.

Its not that they sleep alot, they are primarily awake at night. So, they just aren't awake when you are.
