Your bag is one of two things:

1) Your bag carries dispatches in the field from Commander to Commander, or

2) Your bag carries claymore mines. Claymores are mines that explode in one direction and fire pellets out for 50 meters or less. They are generally used for ambushes or rear security.

The number is simply a serial number designating the bag. The 5/88 might be May 1988, but I am not sure. However, the claymore bag is something that is still used today in training exercises, but the bag was used during Vietnam and MAYBE before Vietnam. I can't help you with the name.

8465-12-127-5602 looks like ti may possibly be a National Stock Number. Which isn't really vital in trying to find who it belongs to. 5/88 looks like it could be a date. Jordan, Nordlinge may very well be a name of a soldier. But the size of the bag you are describing doesn't really sound like any bag I know of in the Army.

A six by six bag with a shoulder strap? Seems unlikely that something heavy would fit in such a small bag. You should link to a photo.

It could be a bag used for carrying a gas mask. I do agree that the number is probably a NSN. Too bad you don't have access to the NSN database.

hubby is in army and said its their nsn # (national stalk number) from the military. Get in your phone book and just call a recruiting office and let them know you found it and more then likely they will come and pick it up and return it to whomever ever or it belongs to. He also said that you could call a national guard or reserves center near you.
