I think I know what you're on about... I saw a yahoo video for talking cats, maybe you saw it too. It was crazy, especially at the end, with this grey cat, it seemed he could manage several sentences! 'Oh Don Johnson! Oh I eyes ya!"

I think it's just that you can find cats that make sounds that are like speech- it's just a quirk, the sound that the cat would normally make, not something that it has learnt. The parrot, on the other hand, learns to mimic human speech, and can actually have quite a wide vocabulary. Parrots that are not in contact with humans won't learn words in this way, whereas the 'speaking cats' may still 'speak' if they were completely wild- it's not human speech, it's just the noise they would naturally make.

Of course you hear of 'the voice of the siamese'... it seems that some oriental cats 'speak' to their owners by yowling, maybe more for companionship rather than communication- it's not parrot mimicry though.

Cats can't talk like parrots, but they do talk in their different sounds of meiowing. I have seven cats, and know which one is which by the way they meiow before I see them. They meiow when hungry, and a different tone in their meiow when contented.

my cat talks to my Norwegian blue parrot, the other day the cat was telling the parrot to come out of its cage and fight like a man, the parrot said go away you fight like a p*ssy, just then my Scottie dog gave the cat a Glaswegian kiss, and told her to behave, just at this point my python shouted to shut up as the football had just began , so peace was restored

no they can't talk like a parrot. But they ...may be... able to fashion a word or too....

I have a cat that can say the word milk.....but only because she has heard me say the word, when I ask her if she would like some.

First I ask her. The I show her the carton of milk & show her the bowl. Then, I ask her again.....& she will slowly meow...but it comes out with a "k" sound at the end.....& sounds like...
MEOW-K......

But no, she can't have a conversation in english.....
It's just a word that she was able to pick up, & understand that she likes the taste of what that word can give to her.

They can't actually speak, although things they say sometimes will resemble words. My husband had a beautiful calico that would walk around our apartment saying 'helloooooo' trying to either find her companion, or 'talk' back to us. But no, they can't make works, although in some cases it's hard to say because a lot of what they say in their 'language' sounds english to me lol.
