Especially since they were the only ones who saw him after he 'rose from the dead'.

You would think he would have gone and visited the Romans who killed him and the Jewish elders who condemned him.
Wouldn't that have proved to the world that he had REALLY rose from the dead? Why would he just appear to people who already believed he was the son of god?

Christians - if he was seen by so many other people why aren't there any records of this? I would think that the very literate Roman occupiers would have made a note of the fact that a criminal they had executed 3 days before had rose from the dead and was walking around again? Why is there no record of this?

By the way, just using the gospels as 'proof' is not sufficient evidence. For one thing this is one source from a biased party (well technically it can be argued that it is 4 parties) that were written DECADES after the fact.

First of all, Jesus wasn't buried in the ground. Secondly, there were guards placed outside of the tomb for such an occasion as the apostles stealing the body. Jesus still arose on the third day and appeared to more than 500 people before His ascension, despite their supposedly failsafe methods of protecting the "dead" body.
Matthew 27:62-66
62The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63"Sir," they said, "we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, 'After three days I will rise again.' 64So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first."
65"Take a guard," Pilate answered. "Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how." 66So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.

It is more likely that he may have been "playing" dead and later removed himself from his tomb. Let us not forget that only a few hundred years ago we were still burying people alive.
There are a few conflicting stories of Christs resurrection. I suggest reading the books Mathew, Mark, and Luke. You'll find the stories might help you understand how different the versions of the story are. There is no clear answer for this age long question. Many will try to tell you how it all went down but, none will ever know unless they were actually there. Also, keep in mind that depending on which "version" of the bible you read, the stories may differ, and of course, 10 people can read the same verse in the bible and interpret it 10 different ways.

There do seem to be alot of questions about what happened to Jesus' body. Interesting. The Jewish priesthood seem to have had the same problem. Evidently, they were afraid that Jesus' body would disappear from the tomb, which would leave them with yet another miracle they couldn't explain. That would seem to have been a serious problem for them. I wonder why they just didn't bring the body out in front of the crowds, to prove that He was actually dead?
I'm smiling here, because I just answered a question from someone who wanted to know why people hate atheists. This sort of question might have something to do with it. You know, if you don't like Christians, that's fine. You don't have to talk to them, you know. The very worst thing they can do about it is to pray for you....:)

Read the Gospel of Peter from the lost books of the bible. It is short only a couple of pages and tells about Jesus's death and Resurrection. But it puts a totally different slant on it. I can see why it was left out of the bible. Science has determined that it is from the 1st centruy and is just as old as the ones in the bible. According to the end of it, it was written by Simon Peter. and it is very interesting. You can find it on the wed under the Gospel of Peter.

Actually, Christ appeared a total of 11 times before HIS ascension. The 1st time was to Mary Magdalene. Then, the disclples on various occassions...HE appeared to Simon Peter alone on the day of resurrection...LASTLY, HE revealed HIMself to the apostles immediately before ascension....So, no, its not likely that the apostles "dug HIM up." There were 11 recorded appearances before Pentecost...And HE was burried in a tomb...so thaey couldn't have "dug HIM up."
(HE isn't a Zombie, HE's the physical manifestation of the true and living GOD!!!)

The apostles weren't the only ones who saw him after he arose from the dead. Mary was the first to see him.
I'm sure there were alot of people in mourning at the tomb, thus they would have had to witness the apostles rolling the stone away from the tomb.

Jesus was seen by several different people after he arose. He told 120 to tarry in the upper room until the Holy Ghost came and they were changed. After they were changed, they were unafraid to wittiness, even though all but one was martered of the12 deciples..

You need to read about a disciple named Thomas. I belive you and he should go bowling together.
He contended much as you did except, he asked Christ to show him the holes in his hands. Then there is the idea od the transfiguration. When Christ appears all in white. Notice, who were the first to see Christ resurrected. Very interesting idea however.
