First, like everybody else has said is paint. Paint the room a color you like that will go with the carpet and the objects you want to keep in your room. If you have a dark carpet, I suggest a paint lighter than the carpet color. If you have a light carpet, go with a paint that is darker than the carpet. The contrast will make both stand out and look great.

Second, hang some pictures/paintings on the walls. You can't hardly go wrong with black and white pictures. Bare walls are boring. Stuff hanging on a wall will really change the look of the room compared to bare walls. Try taking some of your family pictures and have them blown up and developed in black and white to hang on the walls. Makes your room personal and it's cheap too.

Third, hit the yard sales, flea markets, etc. You can find a lot of cool stuff cheap there. Also, watch for sales on stuff in stores. Look for the 50% off sales.

Fourth....Covers!!! You can take a crummy old sofa, chair, or lamp stand and make it look good by throwing a nice looking piece of fabric over it. And for chairs/sofas adding a couple pillows too.

Fifth....It's all about height!!! So many people will never decorate higher than their eye level. That basically leaves the entire upper half of a wall look bare. And remember, bare walls are boring. Every so often in the room, you need something tall. Something that will lead your eyes all the way to the ceiling so that upper part of the wall doesn't look quite so bare. The corners of the room are great places to add height or over main pieces of furniture to give them emphasis and attention.

Sixth...Decorating and art is all about leading peoples' eyes to what you want them to see and focus on. That can be done in a couple ways. Height, arrangement, and lighting are three different good ways of doing this. Something that is taller will definitely catch a person's eye. Sometimes you can use arangements to point to something, just like and arrow. Or say for instance you have a tall bookshelf, you can stair step paintings so that the paintings go from eye level up to the height of the bookshelf, leading your eye too the bookshelf or something you want people to focus on, on top of the bookshelf. You can use lighting to highlight something you want to draw people's attention to. The bright spots in the room will draw more attention.

Last of all, I love plants. They seem to make any room look a little better.

Good luck on the makeover!

First you have to decide on how much do you want to spend, this may be 10 dollars or 1000 dollars.

There are many things you can do with a tight budget to give a room a makeover:

1. re-arrange the furniture.
2. if you can paint, paint one of the walls with a contrasting color such as green, orange, red, royal blue ... etc. and make this wall the focus of the room.
3. add some throws or curtains in new colors, you can make them yourself.
4. use light to change the effect in the room (light dimmers, shades on the lamps, use some scented candles, ... etc
5. check some garage sales in your area maybe someone is selling something you can make use of.
6. check with the department stores in your area for the sale or clearance season, maybe you can get some good deals there.

First of all clean the carpet and if you want paint the walls. If you don't want to paint the walls. Wash them so that you have a clean smell in your room. If your not able to clean the carpet some carpet freshner from $ dollar store will also add freshness to your room. Leave the carpet freshner on the floor for a couple of hours before you vacuum it up. Find inexpensive pictures or knick-knacks at $stores. More your furniture around. Maybe add some small pillows. Different lighting will also helps. Silk or real flowers always add a different look to rooms. Putting more color full accessories in your room will also give it a different look.
