Friend suddenly had amputation. Can't move from 2nd floor apartment at this time. We can't carry her heavy wheelchair up the stairs, can't leave it downstairs, as there is no place to store it and she needs it all the time in her apartment.

I live in the chicagoland area as well. I don't know of a specific place to send you to. I think you should look through your local paper for people selling a wheelchair. It sounds like you need one of the ultra light folding wheelchairs. Talk to her physican or the local pharmacy. They should be able to guide you in the right direction to help you find something affordable. Her insurance may even cover it.

FREECYCLE

The coolest yahoo groups where you can post Wanted ads. In my city is it a very active community and we are all helping each other out. All stuff on freecycle is "free".

I believe there are two for the Chicago area:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/chicagofreecycle/
and
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/chicagoridgefreecycle/

good luck!

Try eBay and also run an ad in your local paper. Also, have people look at garage sales. And ask at your local hospitals. Sometimes they retire or can direct you to wheelchairs.
Good luck!!

Try www.craigslist.com for Chicago.
Someone may have a free or cheap wheelchair there.
