I saw an excellent show on physics the other day called "What The Bleep Do We Know?" and in it, they try to describe quantum physics.
One of the little things they told about was a Chinese fella who photographed water from a local dam at a microscopic level, then had a monk say a blessing over the entire dam area. Then he took another microscopic picture of the water and WOW what a difference! The water before looked sort of brown and kind of ugly, the after picture it looked like a beautiful snowflake!
Then he did another test, taking several bottles of water and setting them on a table. He attached cards to each bottle, some with good thoughts, some with bad. The good ones said "love" "peace", etc., and the bad said things like "I hate you". He let people look at the bottles, and did the whole before/after picture of the water and same thing happened, the bottles that had good words were beautiful pictures and the one that said "I hate you" was almost black.
The physicists were saying that water is so malleable that even speaking to it can change it. Weird huh? Anyway, I guess blessing the water purifies it eh?

Hi jesus_freak557,
Thanks for the question.
Holy water is made holy through the ministerial priests in the Church. Jesus wished that his priesthood be extended to those he calls from the time he ascended into Heaven to the end of time.
When a man is ordained a priest, Jesus uses the body of that priest to bless objects, like water, for use in the world in order to may the world more holy. Holy water is uses especially in Water Baptism, the ordinary means of salvation for mankind.
Sorry for the quick answer. I'm in a little rush. Check out our web site for more Catholic Answers to peoples questions.

all and sundry can bless water, salt, oil, candles, incense, crosses, crucifixes, or the different Christian Artifacts. the purpose of blessing water to have holy water is that once you splatter it you're sending out prayers everywhere the holy water touches and then that merchandise turns into blessed. I do recommend having a clergyman or Deacon bless this stuff. i for my section use Holy Water to bless my domicile once a three hundred and sixty 5 days alongside with blessing my domicile windows and critical the front doors of my domicile with oil with assistance from making a small signal of the go.

It could have to do with the part in the Bible about living water. John 4:4-14 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thrist again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give himbe in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. or The blessing of the Father Son & Holy Spirit.

You have to know what 'Holy' means in that context, which is "Dedicated to God" and the water will then be used in religious services like baptism, blessing the church and for people to bless themselves with, etc. , and that is the gist of the prayers said by the priest when he blesses the water. Anything that is seriously dedicated to God must be holy eg the altar, prayer beads the church, etc.

Praying over or blessing anything makes it "Holy"
Jesus always prayed things prior to blessing things. In the Catholic church, the water used is simply a physical thing to assist in the spiritual blessing.

It's not just Roman Catholics but other denominations bless water for rituals also. By consecrating something you are asking God to bless it. You are setting it aside for holy use. All faiths consecrate things, from Christians to Wiccans.

Catholic is a really different religion, but if you ever watch the exorcist I guess it works, it burns the crap out of that little girl, and that's a catholic priest.
