I would say that almost any labor type job would be available to you. You may have to deal with drug testing, but digging trenches may be an option for you...
Also, you could go to a temp agency, be open, honest and they will place you in SOMETHING believe me...
1. Your parole/probation officer should be helpful to you in this area. At least they are supposed to. Ask for a referral to Voc Rehab if you are on probation. If you aren't, then you can go to Voc Rehab yourself and ask for help!! that is what they are there for...
2. As time passes from your release date, it will be easier to gain employment. Time makes things look less serious.
3. I take it, being in prison for 8 yrs, it must have been a felony. If it wasn't for drugs, you may be in luck. There are many job applications that ask if there were drug related felonies (specific) on your record.

I did four years myself. The best industry is the restaurant/bar business, either as a cook/server/bartender. The restaurant business has so much turnover they are not going to do background checks. If you serve or bartend it's cash money each time you work. Hopefully, you have some experience. If not, most places will train cooks. You can also try being a bouncer/security person. If you have to, say you worked construction the past eight years and give a phone number to one of your friend's as your employer. A lot of construction work is through sub-contractors so you don't necessarily have to give a company name. I know it sucks to have to lie/bs but that's the bed you/we have made. Good luck to you. :)

It depends on what you were convicted for but I know people who have had sentence lengths of about 7 years who have found work after release in; skilled trades and delivery driving.
