Why are they sacred? And is it true rats are sacred also, and they eat up most of the grain?

Would you eat your mother???? Most will wonder where am coming from with such a question AND here goes my theory as to why cows are sacred animals for Hindus.

Mazharlkl and Sajis couldn't have put it better - that is - "Because they says it is their Mother so that they did not eat cow" and why is this? Simple really; when God Krishna was born, he didn't have a mother to breast feed him and thus the cow was called upon to provide milk and butter for the little fellow. (I often wondered as to why his paintings depict him (when small) always near a broken butter pot and with butter all over him - and what a cute picture he portrays!)

I am not a Hindu but the story has always stuck with me! Lastly, Hindus dont worship the cow but merely appreciate what it symbolizes and Briandoogan13 couldn't have put it better!

In Hinduism, the cow is considered sacred and its protection is a recurrent theme in which she is symbolic of abundance, of the sanctity of all life and of the earth that gives much while asking nothing in return. Most Hindus respect the cow as a matriarchal figure for her gentle qualities and providing nurturing milk and its products for a largely vegetarian diet. Hindus do not worship the cow, a common misconception, yet it holds an honoured place in society and most will not eat beef in general.

Hindus don't eat cows for the same reason Jews and Muslims don't eat pork. It is forbidden by their religion. Rules like that establish a sense of community and are designed to keep a group together by setting them apart from others

As far I know, the Rig Veda, in one of it's many stanzas clearly prohibits the killing of cows stating that killing a cow is equivalent
to killing a Brahmin.
Rig Veda 1.164.27
It means"may this inviolable cow yield milk for both the Asvins and may she prosper for our good fortune"
