If you haven't been "practicing" for a while (over a year, say), then you're most likely not a Catholic in good standing anymore. You may even have been automatically excommunicated for some sin you've committed. However, if you've been baptized, an indelible mark was placed on your soul that cannot be removed. The same is true if you've been confirmed. Neither of these marks guarantees you a place in heaven, but they do make you more responsible for your actions than a non-Catholic.

While the diocese where you have been registered may have your name on their list, I seriously doubt that there is a "master list" maintained at the Vatican that you should worry about. You've got more important things to concern yourself with, like, what if you're wrong!?

Actually, short of excommunication, there is no way. It's on your Permanent Record.

Seriously, there really is no way to remove your name from the roles of the Roman Catholic Church, because the church doesn't keep a membership list. When you were baptized and confirmed (if you were), records were made at the parish church of the events, buth your name wasn't then forwarded on to Rome.

The parish can't erase your name from the baptismal record because, historically, the baptism happened. However, your name in the Baptismal Record doesn't mean that you are a practicing Catholic or that you believe this, that, or the other thing-- it just means that you were baptized on that day.

Several of the answers here are good -- there is no "master list" of Catholics. There may be a parish list (if you signed up) you can remove yourself from with a simple letter to the parish. As others have pointed out you cannot erase your baptismal records.

The answer really depends on your intent. First of all if you live in Germany and are trying to get out of paying the church tax, things are much more complicated and things are changing. I can't advise you on that. If this is simply an act of personal defiance, I suppose it depends on what satisfies you. Disenrolling from the parish may be sufficient. Or, you may want to get excommunicated, as others have pointed out, probably by publically renouncing your faith (or joining another church).

Number one, why would you want to?

You can either get an interdict or be excommunicated

There are a few offenses for which Latin Rite Roman Catholics are automatically excommunicated:

Apostasy (a term generally employed to describe the formal renunciation of one's religion),

Heresy (which means either a choice of beliefs or a faction of dissident believers),

Schism (means a division or a split, usually in an organization or a movement),

Simony (is the ecclesiastical crime and personal sin of paying for offices or positions in the hierarchy of a church),

Desecration of the Eucharist (self explanitory),

Physical force against the Pope (self explanatory),

Attempted sacramental absolution of a partner in adultery,

Ordination of a bishop without a Papal mandate

For non-electors present in the conclave, revelation of the details of the conclave,

Simoniacal provision of the Papal office,

Violation of the sacramental seal of confession by a priest or bishop, and

Procurement of a completed abortion.

An interdict can also be a penalty against a specific individual. It is like excommunication in that the person is barred from receiving the sacraments and participating in public worship, but it does not bar the person from continuing to hold and exercise ecclesiastical office. Thus, for a lay member of the church, it is basically equivalent to excommunication.

Certain offenses incur an automatic interdict:

Physical violence against a bishop

Attempting to preside over or concelebrate in Mass while being a deacon or lay person

Hearing and/or attempting to absolve confessions while being a deacon or lay person

Falsely accusing a priest of soliciting adultery while in confession

Attempting to marry while having a perpetual vow of chastity

failing to complete your easter duties without overwhelming reason for being unable to will normally automatically exclude you from the church.

this is one of the greatest differences between catholic and protestant observance. protestants belong to their denomination mainly because of things they believe. to be a catholic you must not only believe certain things, you must also put them into practice.
