When Rome, probalby under Constantine, said hey these are pagan ceremonies lets take them and make they celebrate something chrisitan so he said spring - new life - yep Easter is now the celebration of The Ressurection of Christ! And Christs birth he assigned to the winter solsitce.

I would agree with the other posts. That Easter was celebrated the first Sunday after the cruxifiction. In regards to the ceremony being tied to a pagan holiday. It is tied directly to the Jewish celebration of passover. The one thing that many forget is that Jesus was a Jew. After the death of Jesus the disciples continued to worship at the temple and thought of themselves as Jewish.

On the Sunday Jesus rose from the dead. He was killed on Friday and rose on Sunday..That was the first Easter, the celebration of Jesus resurrection.

Actually, the date is still under dispute to this day.

I do not know when this decision was made. But its true meaning has long been lost, it means nothing today but commercialism.
