A better question would be how many women witnesses are eqal to one male witness in a court where Sharia law is applicable.

Unlike the old and new testament, there is no clear text in Koran that consider women inferior to men. A Muslim woman had more rights than a Christian or Jewish woman. Only since the rule of the Ottoman that many of the woman' s right were taken away from her. Some of the modern extreme Muslims considers woman as an asset but this is unrelated to Islam itself

Women mean in Islam the mother, the wife, the sister, and the daughter, all have the highest respect. Even the aunt is considred like the mother. If you want a true fair opnion based on scientific search then look for what Yvonne Ridley an expert in collecting and analyzing data did found about Muslim women. Search the web.

Islam does not oppress women. It is a misguided belief. Just because they are conservative does not give us the right to call them women oppressors.
In the US, Before the feminist movement, our women are all treated conservatively. It's not a matter of oppression.
However, I do agree that men should respect women of all cultures and do not take advantage of the conservative value.

Dear Sandra,
In Islam women are considered the perservers of the future of society, while man is considered the protector of the present. Based on this logic the responsibilities given to men are to provide and meet the immediate needs such as food and nourishment and protection from invasions from outside or aggression from within the society. Women are given the role of those who are to be given the freedom from extracting money from the World at large to feed the family. In return she is given the responsibility to nurture and grow the future generations in peace of the house, without have to worry about dealing with the World at large or in many cases serving other men at large to bring food to the family table.
Such roles of men and women are defined in general terms, but when needed, exceptions are always allowed. The Prophet of Islam himself was an employee of an arab businesswoman, whose money played a big role in the propagation of Islam. Mohammad's wife Khadija also holds the distinction of being the first adult Muslim. Similarly, after the death of Mohammad in one of the battles, one of his younger wives lead an army of his companions, showing that women had the ability or lead men when necessary in business or even in a war. But, the best place for women is to gently and lovingly raise the future generations so that a caring society emerges.
In Islam women are not considered half of a man at all. In the sight of God men and women are considered completely equal. There are clear verses that establish this fact.
However, Islam recognizes women as weaker in external physical strength requiring combat, so more rights are assigned to women but in an oblique way, so as to not offend the male dominated society of that time.
For example, when property is divided, the man gets twice the share of the woman (which may be the basis of your question). BUT, man's share has the rights of everyone in it, his wife, children, his parents and siblings as well as the poor of the family and neighborhood and the needy. While the share of the woman, although half of the man, is exclusively hers. Her children or husband have no right in her share, her parents get their share from her brothers but not hers. She can give it to them if she likes, but it is understood clearly that it is HER SHARE, where as the man's share by right belongs to not only him but his entire family. So, what at first glance seems an unjust division is actually a subtle way of empowering women through economics.
In the court of Law in accordance with Islamic laws, being a witness is a duty (with perils). If a person is proven to commit perjury in court, then the witness is given the same punishment as the accused would have gotten. In many cases being a witness had no benefit, and only the peril of not only death in some situation, but also of people disliking you or hating you for being a witness against them.
Here again women are protected from this thankless job by saying that one male witness is equal to two females, and again is misconstrued as men being twice as women. When in fact it is also a subtle way of protecting the woman.
Women are kept protected from exposure to dangers as much as possible as children depend on them. There is a saying from the Prophet that the man is the head of the family, while the woman is the Center of it. My mom always teased that wherever the center turns, the head turns that way too... lol.
Lastly Muhammad used to regularly stand up in respect and honor for his daughter when she would enter the mosque. The old arabs used to dislike this behavior, as they had to stand up for a young woman (she was 18 when our prophet died). He said that those who do not respect and honor their women do not respect themselves as their wives are the mothers of all of their future generations. Similarly, wives are asked to respect and honor their husbands as fathers of all their future generations.
I hope this makes sense. I will be happy to further questions if you have any.
Peace
