Either the hole isn't hitting the nerve (YET!) or have you been having problems with this tooth in the past? Had it been hurting for a while? Have you had a root canal in the past?
An exposed nerve will HURT! But after it's been exposed for a long time, the pain may stop - the nerve can and will decay - basically, it does the same thing as a root canal - all by itself. However, you're still dealing with a tooth that is probably decaying at a rapid rate. You're very prone to an abscess - and you don't want any of that!!
Even if this isn't hurting, you need to get to a dentist ASAP.
Good Luck!

The thing you are tasting is a mixture of blood and pus. When you suck the hole, you place pressure on the nerves causing you pain. You can gargle with warm salt water. This will help kill bacteria and flush out the pus. If the tooth isn't too badly decayed, they will do root canal treatment on the tooth. An endodontist can do the procedure in 2 to 3 hours but if the infection is bad, you might have to come back for another session or two. Now if the tooth is too badly decayed and the prognosis of the tooth is poor even if it is root canaled, then the Dentist might opt to just have it pulled. That can take just 15 minutes to 30 minutes. You may experience slight to moderate pain. I don't think you will experience intense pain.

Your teeth are a mass of calcium (LOL; That's good)
If your tooth isn't dead, then the cavity which is the consistency of soft leather at this poing is acting like an insulator, I guarentee you that the decay will eventually get to the nerve INSIDE the tooth. The pain will begin as a dull ached, probably when you eat, It will get worse and worse, then become spontaneous pain. As it worsens day by day you may go to the dentist. Eventually the pain will cresciendo to a killing shooting pain. You may avoid the dentist and tough it out. The tooth will die. and your good for a few weeks.
When the infection sets in your tooth will need a root canal.

because either the hole doesnt not go through to the root (nerve!) or you've had the nerve removed (root canal treatment)..
If it's the first, I'd get it filled asap as when the nerve is exposed, you WILL feel the pain!!

Probably because even though it feels big, it's not deep enough. You're lucky. Get to the dentist to fill it and avoid getting a root canal.

go see a dentist, believe me, you don't want it to start hurting! It will eventually and you'll have to have a root canal. Hopefully it isn't too late to have it filled........good luck!
