All of a sudden videos having avi format have stopped playig. Only video plays. Other formats such as mpg are working without any problem. I have tried using Winamp as well as Windows media player. WMP says there is an error downloading codec.

The AVI format has more that one codec (coder/decoder) available for it. You are probably trying to open a file in the newer DIVX codec, which uses the AVI extension but is different then the codec shipped with Windows. Go to divx.com and you can download the lastest version of the divx codec (plus a divx players) for free.

Try downloading new or reinstalling the old codecs.

One of the best codec packs I've found personally is:
Combined Community Codec Pack

You can choose to not install the Zoomplayer/WMP Classic if you don't want 2 more media players.

There is something wrong with the Codecs on your computer. You can download Divx or VLC player. VLC player is an excellent player and doesn't require any codecs. it plays most video file formats.

Download a programme called Gspot (no joke) it will tell you the codecs you need ... be careful of codec packs as some will screw up your machine - just download and install the ones you need.
