Father born in Bournemouth in 1917, his father also believed ;born in UK; how does this tie in with his passport showing this cross: it's the Christian cross with an additional shorter hoizontal line above the first one: married in a CofE church, so what could be the connection?

I did a little looking around on the net, which admittedly is not one of the best resources, but it's what's at my disposal.

If he was born in 1917 it is likely he was conscripted in WWII. The Cross of Lorraine figured in the Free French Republic, ie the resistance. If your father had any efforts in le Resisténce this may have been an emblem.

It was also an emblem for several military units in several allied militaries.

Did your father have dual citizenship? A cross resembling that of Lorraine appears on the Hungarian, Slovak, Moravian and Belarusian regalia, among others.

It is possible the passport was issued in a British territory that included this insignia - there are too many to search.

Finally, it is possible your father added it yourself, although you don't mention that it appears to have been added afterwards.

Quite a family mystery, don't you think?

The cross of lorraine and the cross of the greek orthodox church are very different. greek crosses look more like maltese crosses, so from the way you describe it I would say its the french one.

I don't know. Is it like part of the passport information itself (like made into the document) or is it a stamped symbol?

When was it issued?
