I think the reason people get so overheated when discussing religion is that it is so important in people's lives. For many people, it forms the foundation for everything they do.
When discussing anything else, even politics (although that can become quite heated as well), there is a chance that a person's view point can change. They can have an, "Oh, I never really thought of it that way," moment. New information can cause people to change their viewpoint. Heck, people can even change their political leanings over time.
This doesn't generally happen with religion. A person's religious beliefs have, in most cases, been ingrained in them since an early age. It is very difficult to change a person's opinion about religion, and many people will get offended if you try.
Part of the reason for this is the importance religion plays in a person's life. In many religions, what happens to you for all eternity is based on what your religion is. Believers will be rewarded, while non-believers are punished. There is also an aspect in some religions that teaches its followers the importance of spreading that religion and bringin others into the fold. Again, eternal rewards play a part.

I've heard it said that one shouldn't discuss "religion" or "politics" and the results of doing so can be extremely overheated participants simply due to the passionate beliefs held by each side of the issues. There is no gray area in either category, you believe what you believe and nothing or no one can change your point of view.

Sometimes religious discussions involve controversy about topics like abortion, homosexuality and hell which can get overheated and which aren't very fun.

i agree with you because by discussing different religions we can learn how other people of other cultures and religions handle their way of life.....so it is interesting.but like in every council there can occur stupid conflicts between immature folks............!
