But it's been shaped by society and history where women used to hide their age, so now women just follow the same 'rules'.

Take it as a compliment. when someone ask your age, they are thinking about a more serious relationship, like is this person within my age specifications that we could go farther. if she lies, she is saying I don't want him to lose interest in me. think about what would motivate someone to lie . (or what would motivate you to lie)

because even if they don't match their age in looks people will think differently of them depending on their answer. If they look older than their age, younger than their age, where they should be in life etc.
