Have you read the book 'The trouble with islam' by pakistani ex muslim irshad manji? In this book she launches a massive attack on muslims saying that muslims are trying to convert others by force, mostly by using violance. she even brands islam as a curse that has plagued our planet , and irshad was born a muslim in pakistan.
I wonder how muslims can answer her ?
( apart of abuse and death threats no muslim has ever answered her with reason)
why so?

I was a practicing Christian for over thirty years and could write a very similar book about Christianity.

She's obviously an unhappy Muslim, do you likewise consider those who compliment Islam to be so credible?

There are approximately one billion Muslims and trotting out one unhappy Muslim to use as evidence to support what we already know (Fundie Christians hate Muslims) is silly. How much did Pat Robertson pay her?

Well, Mate, I lived in Saudi Arabia for about a year over twenty years ago and no one tried to convert me at all, using force or otherwise.

Hey everyone this guy strongly believes that he is right and wants to expose the evil. Ex-Muslims label him wise and intelligent. But really he is stupid and dumb because honestly if you strongly believe in something and want to put an end to it what will you be doing sitting on the Internet and trying to push your stupid ideologies on people? I say if he really believes and hates the so called evil, why doesn't he do something valuable with his er..talents? I'm sure he is just a wimp. And now I know what he is going to say: Muslims don't like the truth OR ask the ex-Muslims they have seen it. But i converted to Islam so I know those people have made the worst decision and I too have seen Islam and other beliefs for myself. But do I, although I believe my religion is correct, go around and try to bring down other religions, even the one i converted from? No because it doesn't effect me and If he knows that Islam is false, why is he burning?

Get a brain!Get a life bro! You ain't doing nothing but wasting your precious "Atheist Time"

If you want to put your influences on other people don't be a dork because the Internet isn't helping.

God is Wise and Powerful...a idiot like you won't change my view or other people who believe in God/Allah.

And you a curse

There a muslim has DARED to answer you, satisfied?

And NO ONE forced me to convert

a Muslim cannot force another person to become Muslim.
that irshad manji is a lesbian who doesn't know her facts about Islam.and she is not an ex-Muslim.she still calls herself a Muslim.but she says she's trying to reform Islam.a christian journalist has even criticized her book.because her opinions are not based on facts.its based on fiction.

Ive read less fiction in a lord of the rings book.

and yes there some muslim homesexual but they dont go around telling the world about because they know that it is wrong.that woman think its ok to be gay in islam.when its not!

Well, sometimes parents force their kids to eat their breakfast, to go to school, etc. They want the best for their kids.

The Arabs also force their people to become Muslims because they feel it is the best religion for their people.

Sometimes the way they force their people are not right and are against the Al Quran (Muslims' bible) which says do not kill. Other than that, it's ok.

Irshad is a homosexual who enjoys wide support from christian-zionists of the USA. Her style of writing resemembles that of a propaganda Holywood movie that show facts mingled with fiction and are full of subliminal messages.

Most probably she is an Afrikan Khoja, not a Pakistani.

"Salaam,

I read "The trouble with Islam" when it first came out. For those of you who are interested, she also has a website www.muslim-refusenik.com. The first thing I noticed about her approach was how subjective it was, she makes little or not attempt to include a comprehensive perspective of the issues she is addressing, instead she refers to the most extreme views available. From the introduction alone it is clear that she is not interested in an objective or academic discussion, just sensationalism (which makes sense when you consider she is friends with Salman Rushdie). I think what she hopes to achieve is an outraged response from the Muslim community, just so she can throw herself into the limelight as the new crusader for liberal Islamic reform.

Her work is also full of generalizations, she does not take into account any real divergence of Islamic thought (for example Sunni and Shia). This might be because she is ignorant of such realities, however what is more likely is that she is trying to portray 'Islam' as a monolithic and totalitarian structure (notice the references to an 'army of automotons') and if she acknowledges any real differences in the Muslim world (in anything more than a superficial mention) then she risks jeapordizing her whole argument that 'Islam' is in need of reform.

She also attempts to take fragments of Islamic history (e.g. the Sufis, Ijtihad) and distort them to fit into her own framework of a 'liberal and tolerant Islam'. This is something Liberal-minded Muslim intellectuals and western intellectuals seeking to deconstruct the political manifestation of Islam have been doing for years. Thomas Friedman (from the NY Times) tried to characterize Islam in an interview with CNN as being 'a religion solely concerned with the relationship between the believer and God' and 'having nothing to do with politics'. While it may be true that everything in Islam is about the human-divine relationship, it is impossible to argue that Islam says nothing about politics. We only need to look at the character of Imam Ali (a) to realize that Islam (and God) have everything to do with politics, afterall what good is our faith if we won't stand up against injustice and oppression? Isn't this politics?

Her concept of 'Operation Ijtihad' as the solution is also flawed, as I said liberal-Muslim intellectuals have been suggesting this for quite a while. Essentially they want to use Ijtihad as a cover to make any laws they want, which naturally defeats the purpose of Ijtihad. Ijtihad is derived from the root jahada (like jihad) which means "He exerted himself", so the Mujtahid is exerting himself to discover the true intention of Islamic law and determine what is right and wrong in specific situations (according to God). However this liberal concept of Ijtihad almost completely removes God from the equation, the concern now is justifying man-made law with religious sources (which is, in effect, backwards-ijtihad).

Overall, I definately agree that Irshad Manji is the unfortunate product of the western Muslim identity crisis, because she was uncomfortable with her identity and she recieved such a negative response from the community she chose to rebel against their values. For example, she talks about how much she hated the idea of being married off to someone, and now she is a Lesbian (not a difficult connection to make). Also, the fact she deliberately goes to Israel and posts photos of herself with Salman Rushdie just show that she is still going through that same teenage rebellion! Personally, I think all she wants is attention and outrage, she wants everyone to be shocked by what she is doing, she wants to make a statement. And I agree with Fatima that if there is one thing we can learn from her, it is that our youth are faced with many challenges in the western world, and we can't solve their problems by ignoring them, or answer their questions by silencing them. We have a responsibility to develop a dynamic and open approach to engaging the youth of our communities with Islam, and when they ask us questions we should always be willing to go that extra mile to find them the best (and most correct) answers!

Oh and I'm glad to hear she isn't your relative Fatima, that would make family reunions just a little awkward!"
