Well they are still christians, so they believe Jesus is the son of God and came to save us. But the reason they broke from the Catholic church is because they felt that the catholics were too strict and were frightening peole into religion. So protestants will happily use contraception and they're just a little more accepting.

In the middle ages the Catholic Church was highly wealthy and highly corrupt. You can read yourself in history books about Popes that had mistresses and many children and frequented brothels. In those days you could pay your way into heaven by buying Papal Indulgences which meant that your sins were forgiven if you gave the church enough money. The bible existed only in Latin and was considered to be a secret book that only the clergy should have access too.

Martin Luther is considered the first protestant: he protested against these and many other of the practices of the Roman Catholic church at the time. His 'tidied up' version of Christianity is called Lutherism and is still practiced widely today. He believed that you shouldn't be able to buy your way into heaven and that everybody should be allowed to read the sacred words of the bible; among other things.

Following Martin Luther's lead other people in other parts of Europe also became dissafected with the Catholic Church and splintered off to practice their own versions of christianity: Eposcopalian, Anglican, United and many others.

It is interesting to note that the modern Catholic Church has implemented most of the reforms that Martin Luther suggested.

A Christian belonging to one of the three great divisions of Christianity (the other two are the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church). Protestantism began during the Renaissance as a protest against the established (Roman Catholic) church. That protest, led by Martin Luther, was called the Reformation, because it sprang from a desire to reform the church and cleanse it of corruption, such as the selling of indulgences.

Protestants hold a great variety of beliefs, but they are united in rejecting the authority of the pope. Protestant groups include the Amish, the Anglican Communion, the Assemblies of God, the Baptists, Christian Science, the Congregationalists, the Lutheran Church, the Mennonites, the Methodists, the Presbyterian Church, and the Quakers.

The Church of England is Protestant and is governed by bishops, with the king or queen as its official head. One of the primary results of the Reformation, it was founded in the early sixteenth century when King Henry VIII declared that he, not the pope, was the head of the Christian Church in England. The Church of England is the original church of the Anglican Communion.

the Protestant religion was formed by Henry the VIII because the Catholic Pope would not let him divorce one of his wives.

Although that was the final straw, many in England at the time viewed the Catholic religion as corrupt and too Powerful, their argument was that the Catholic Church had lost sight of what it should be doing ie teaching the people about Jesus and how to lead their lives. Also they believed that services should be in the people's native tongue rather than Latin so more could understand what was being said.

Therefore Protestant Churches and services are more simple and less formulaic and tend to be more interesting and less repetitive.

Basically The Protestant Church is a bit more intune with the world at that moment in time.

There are many protestant denominations and most of them are Christian. They all come from the Catholic church back at the time of Martin Luther and they split off then in "protest" of the abuses they saw within the Catholic church and have been splitting off into numerous denominations since then but thats basically where it started. Some split away and others stayed to work within the Catholic church to correct the abuses.

Protestants are people who are mad at the Mother (Catholic) Church for making them follow the rules, so they all invented their own religions, most of which have no rules.
