I had a cat in Brooklyn who disappeared for six months. I thought sure I would never see him again. And then one day one of the kids found him in under a bush right near the house. He was dirty and under fed, but we cleaned him up and fed him and he was back to his old self in no time.

I got a call from family on the east coast, asking me to come back immediately because my mother was ill. I had a friend stay with my cat, and I took off for a planned two-week stay. I became ill while away, and my stay way extended to 6 weeks. After I had been gone for 3 weeks, my cat decided I wasn't coming back. He didn't care for my friend, so he left. When I returned home, I called and called for him, but he didn't return home. I assumed he had either died or found someplace he liked better.

Eleven months later, I received a phone call from our local animal control officer. A neighbor had called her regarding a stray cat she had been feeding for several months. The animal control officer scanned my cat's microchip, and then phoned me to come retrieve him. My cat had been living under a bush in a neighbor's yard for months. The neighbor had been feeding him regularly, so my cat was in great shape.

He was happy to be home, but continued visiting the kind neighbors who had fed him while he was away. Until the day he died, he spent days with my neighbors and nights with me.
