I have a 4 1/2 month old staff, who is house trained (thanks to a crate!!), but he religiously piddles when he is greeted by someone other than a family member! He is very "spunky" and "gobby" and boisterous, but in a playful way. We have asked visitors to ignore him, which they do, and even after 1/2 an hour, my poor neighbour can still end up with wet feet!! NOT PLEASANT!! I do not want to isolate him as this does not rectify the problem, just postpones it. I need a strategy that has an immediate effect and leaves visitors dry!

Thank you for your replies.. Just to ask another.. Would castration help?. I am going to get him done in a couple of months regardless, but just wondered if this would have any bearing on his little problem..

This is called submissive urination. This is what you do.
When you or family get home ignore him for 10 min, then in a calm voice make him sit and tell him "good sit" pet him in a calm manner. Then walk away. DO NOT get the dog excited. Don't talk to him in a high pitch baby voice. allways use a low key calm voice. The dog only gets calm pets and only if he sits calmly.

Well...like the others have said, it's part of their 'puppyhood' and will grow out of it. My own Lhasa Apso, when a pup had the same unerring knack of leaving an artistic trail whenever he was excited or happy.
Reasoning with him ...either with words or punishment is not going to work as this a spontaneous reaction rather than something he does on purpose. So it won't go away as quickly as you wish...
However, for the time being if this habit of your pup of washing your neighbour's feet is getting a little embarrassing, I 'd suggest setting up a playpen for him with his favourite chew toys where you can put him when you have visitors. If people want to pet or admire him, they can do it there without getting their feet wet :-) AND your pup can also get used to the idea of having neighbours around without embarrassing results.
I did this with my dog, maybe the pen got a little messy and I had to clean it out after my friends left...but it worked for me eventually...hope it does for you too!

sorry but thats part of being a puppy. the puppy will learn better bladder control as he gets older. my gf's puppy took 3 months to completely get over that stage. be patient and try not to get too upset with the pup. if someone 10 times your size came at you, you'd wee, too.

it must be something to do with the breed. my staffy used to do it when he got really excited as a pup but only does it extremely rarely now that he is older. he's now two. hang in there. they're a beautiful dog.
