The original Mustang (mid-'64, as '65 model) was nothing but a re-styled Ford Falcon. Even into the '90s they used small (Pinto?) brakes and 4-lug wheels. But there were plenty of performance versions and options over the years that generated musclecar performance.

I would say that depends on which optional engines were
ordered. In my opinion the 428 and 429 CJs and Super CJs
were,as were the Boss lines (302,351,429). A case could be
made for the 289HP, 351W ('69 only), the 4-barrel Clevelands,
the 390 4-barrels. I don't think that moniker would apply to
the base 289s and 302s or the L-6 engines.

Absolutely. Even if you consider that the first models were pretty weak, they were the start of a revolution, and to not call them the original musclecars would be a great disservice to Mustang, Ford and American muscle in general.

appropriate became in all hazard the sixty 9 428/9 CJ BTW although there are particular fashions that do qualify/journey the definition of MC's. Mustangs are many times no longer seen/categorised as Muscle autos, they are pony autos (same w/ the camaro)
