I have only been called once to exorcise posessing spirits. The evidence abounded, though. Perfume bottles would fly up from behind picture frames and hurl themselves at the woman who was involved. After asking God's protection, I walked into the room.
The bottles flew at me just as they did at her, but when they got about 2 feet away from me, they stopped in mid flight and dropped to the ground. I asked if she had any books on witchcraft, and she said no, so I thought about the things that the Bible mentions as evil, and asked if she had any books on astrology. She had many, but the Spirit told me that just wasn't it.
I asked her if she was SURE there wasn't something else. She himmed and hawed around, then said, "Well, I have this." She reached into her bookcase and pulled out a Satanic Bible.
I cast the demons out in the name of Jesus, then took the books to the middle of a barron street and burned them. When the books finished burning, a large wind came out of nowhere and blew the ashes away. A thought came into my head about the Holy Spirit being like a wind... you don't know from where it comes or where it goes.
They asked what they should do next, and I told them to find a church that they liked and stay in it. About 10 years later, the couple called me and thanked me for what I did. I had to explain that it wasn't me who did it, but God working through me who did it. Everything seemed fine after that.
As far as medical treatments go, they can treat the physical symptoms to some degree, but they can't remove the source of the problem.

What a person thinks of as a possessing spirit might actually be an aspect of their personality they have suppressed. Psychological treatment might help them to reintegrate the "spirit" into their personality. Some forms of psychotherapy encourage people to engage in a dialogue with aspects of themselves they are uncomfortable with. Perhaps, encouraging the person to have a dialogue with the "spirit" to find out what it wants might be more productive than trying to drive it away through exorcism. There is a saying "what you resist persists" - I think there is a great deal of truth in this. If the "spirit" does represent an aspect of someone's personality, then trying to get rid of it might not be such a good idea.

It depends what you would call exorcism, the early Church simply used the authority of Jesus to tell the evil spirit to go,none of this "holy water"ritualistic nonsence.
The drugs may only supress the spirit while the patient keeps taking the medication.

There are medical treatments, but I don't know if they will work. I think any person who is born again [who has the Holy Spirit] can be helpful with this. Jesus has given us [His followers] authority over all of these things. I think both medical and spiritual treatments together would be great!

Medical treatments. I have yet to find any substantial proof for possession of spirits. I have seen a lot of these supposed possessions brought to light, being merely hoaxes to gain reputation and money from gullible people.

Most cases of reported possession of spirit has a traumatic childhood history (abuse, sexually harassed, and other developmental trauma) (70%)
88% of reported cases among 18 years old and up are eventually diagnosed with Schizophrenia (undifferentiated)
20-34% of them yields positive on drug test…
So I bet it’s on the dopamine neurotransmitter issue rather than paranormal
Hope these helped a bit…goodluck on your paper!

The Catholic church still performs exorcism. The rest of it belongs to Hollywood.
